Oliver Kahn, Katrin Müller Hohenstein, Jogi Loew & Ottmar Hitzfeld on ZDF + Some Hocus Pocus!

Normally I provide near-literal translations, but this video is simply too long and most people are probably more interested in what Jogi Loew, Katrin Müller Hohenstein, Oliver Kahn (they can barely stand to look at each other - a source of constant amusement to me - and rarely make eye-contact) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (a real gent!) had to say in the aftermath than in Jogi Loew’s sweet linguistic quirks (sag ich mal…)

As a result the translation is somewhat shortened. What presenters had to say has been shortened (noted by italic font). More literal translation is not italicized. Jogi is in bold font.

Kathrin Müller Hohenstein: We said before the game it wasn’t important. Perhaps we shouldn’t have. 5 goals scored against us - this simply can’t be.

Kahn: This was not a team-performance. Combined with individual failures it can lead to this situation.

Kathrin welcomes Loew who shakes hands and greets them (Servus!)

Kathrin notes: Christ! What a game! 8 goals! The fans are probably not so thrilled...

Loew: This was not an expected result. Concentration failures, bad off-the-ball-playing, terrible defensive work, coordination failures - all this has been revealed - and as a result the opponent gets 5 goals.

Kathrin asks, at length, about the importance of this game - its relevance.

Loew replies: It was a test-match. We wanted to see certain things. There’s a lot the team will take away from this game, because so many errors occurred. There are two weeks in which the team’s chemistry can be improved.

Kahn: I’ve experienced games like this fresh out of training camp. He notes some of the players will have been nervous about their squad prospects (4 players will be sent home this week). Coordination is lacking. Too many players (the Bayern boys) are still missing. It’s not that surprising a result.

Kathrin: The last time a player managed a hat-trick against Germany was in 2001. It was Michael Owen and Oliver Kahn was in the goal-mouth…

…Kahn: that’s true…

…and we’ve seen that the Bayern players are missing in the defence.

Loew: Of course. They are coming this evening. They’ll start training on Monday. They were definitely missed.

Kathrin: The Bayern players are coming after a great disappointment. Now the national team has had a disappointment too. How will the team cope?

Loew: this game will not be discussed at any great length - he’s no interest in it. Preparations start in earnest on Monday and he’s spoken with the Bayern players on the telephone and he has no doubt about the player’s motivation.

Kahn: No point in the Bayern boys dwelling on this. They’ve brought a great deal to International football in the past two years and should focus on that. Enormously successful International players are coming - and they should come with their heads held high. If they get to the final (or closer to it) it may become more difficult since they’ve lost a couple of finals but they should arrive full of confidence and remember the good games they’ve had with the national team hitherto.

Kathrin: Ter Stegen had an unlucky debut. (Video illustrates this - she comments on it). What does Loew have to say to this?

Loew: I told him just now to keep his head up. He played a great season. Mistakes happened in the defence too. These are players who had their faces to goal and played long balls into the 16 yard area. The keeper might come a bit too late - the defence worries me more. (Loew comments on their lamentable positioning) Ter Stegen is a good player with good qualities. (Literally: the boy has good qualities!)

Kahn reminisces about similar disasters in his career - especially when he was young. Very hard to debut for this team. One mustn’t forget his incredible season and the boy shouldn’t get stuck on it.

Kathrin asks about the cut the squad will have to make. Those players had the chance to show what they can do today. Will there be consequences?

Loew: No. It wasn’t a game to look at individual qualities. I wanted to see what the team could bring. What the individuals could bring to a difficult tournament (he contradicts himself slightly - this is not a translation error). So much happened in the game it needs to be thought about. I won’t focus on individuals. I don’t want to use very hard practices over the past few days as an excuse either. We’ll do these things better in the future.

Kathrin notes he’ll have to make it plain to certain players they’re not required. Squad numbers will have to be considered too (she reels them off past 24). Is there a reason certain players are numbered past 23?

Loew: No.

Kathrin notes the online poll of ZDF readers. They want Wiese out (see graphic at 8:47). Does Loew have a fixed number 2?

Loew: There’s no reason to be hard and fast on this point. I'll chat with the players and decide who’s going home. It’s a big chance, and a good experience for those we might see in 2014, 2016. They are top-professionals who will have considered this a good experience.

Kathrin asks what he said to Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Loew: I said he’d thrashed the Spaniards (in 2010) so maybe we’ll be World Cup winners in 2014! (they laugh)

Kathrin thanks him for coming. Camera moves over to Hitzfeld and ZDF presenter.

Presenter thanks him for coming. Notes he’s given the German team a good scare just before the Euros.

Hitzfeld: Germany played better at first. We had our backs to the wall. We got into the game and started playing on the counter. There were certain holes in the German defence which we used. Germany was very offensively placed. I don’t think they’ll play like that at the Euros. They were trying things out.

Presenter asks the consequences are of a debacle like this one?

Hitzfeld: It’s a great omen. We were the only ones to beat Spain at the World Cup tournament and then the Spaniards went on to win it so I’m convinced that Germany will go on to win the tournament!

Presenter: Positive?

Hitzfeld: They have to take lessons from this. There are things the team can improve which they wouldn’t be able to improve later on in a tournament while it is under-way. There’s still time. He expects Germany to do well.

Presenter asks about the missing Bayern players.

Hitzfeld: A difficult situation, certainly. The player will work it out in their own time. You can have bad experiences though and you just have to get up and continue. And Germans are known for picking themselves up again and reacting well and the players have a good character and will have a good reaction.

Camera switches back. Kathrin notes how optimistic and generous this assessment is. And wonder about signs! Is Kahn also optimistic?

Kahn notes he still thinks the Germans are favourites. Loew and Co. will fix up any mistakes. When the Bayern-bloc arrive there will be 14 days. This game will not be important in the long run.
