World Cup 2012 star Arne Friedrich's fitness struggles look set to continue after Wolfsburg confirmed on their official website that the defender will miss the start of the club's pre-season preparations.
The 32-year-old has aggravated a back injury he had a surgery on last year, which ruled him out until the winter break, and will now undergo rehabilitation rather than commence training.
The defender seemed to have put his nightmare spell on the sidelines behind after returning in January, but this setback is a severe blow to the ex-Hertha Berlin defender's ambitions for club and country.
It has been widely speculated that the centre-half is even considering retirement after an injury-plagued year in Wolfsburg. Friedrich is trying to work his way back to fitness, and is currently rehabilitating in Berlin.
Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath is famous for his intensive approach to physical training, and often makes his players run and jump with a medicine ball in each hand. Given Friedrich's advancing age, he is facing an uphill task to make it back into the Wolves' starting team.
