Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, as I suspect an awful lot of sports doping went on before laws were enacted & testing began.

I'm fairly certain it wasn't illegal in association football until 1966 (and no list of banned substances until a year later) - I could be wrong though. Doping was so common back then (there were completely different attitudes toward it at the time), I'd be surprised if any of the teams weren't on something. Coaches regarded it as little more than a "lift" until some highly publicized deaths took place in the '60s.
