Getting to the control room of the mall wasn't that difficult. Connor and I tried to keep up the pretense of being two bored teenagers wandering around an abandoned mall, totally normal, but it didn't even have a point. There was nobody around. Of course, Buffy and Xander and everyone was probably busy conferring, without me, as usual, and all the soldiers were around the perimeter like they should be. That's a fault of ours, I think. We don't believe that anything can strike from the inside. Like Connor and I are about to do.
Oh my god, we're like the bad guys.
As we're standing in front of the fuse box, I feel the floor shake slightly under my feet. I rest the palm of one hand on the butt of the gun strapped to my thigh and breathe deeply. We have a plan. We can't back down now. Anyway, it's probably nothing, just my imagination, if anything was going on it would be louder. There might be explosions. Nothing ever truly gets done without explosions, so I've learned.
I look at Connor. He looks at me. I nod, bite my lip, reach out and pull. There's a small crackling sound and then everything is dark. It takes me a little while to adjust to the sudden blackness surrounding me. But I'm pretty adjustable. Not like that one time with that paralyzing demon, I mean like psychologically.
"Run," I whisper, and then I do.
