Suitability:
Despite being only sixteen, Shion has been living as an adult in his society for some time. He carries himself as an adult, mature and independent, making it easy for him to live on his own if needed. He can hold a job and has even done so for many years within No.6 before having to escape thanks to an accusation of murder. Furthermore, concepts such as sex are not unfamiliar to him. Though he reacted with surprise towards Safu's request that they have sex, seemingly confused by her question (undoubtedly due to the abruptness of it), Shion is not altogether unfamiliar with romantic relationships. He seems comfortable enough with kissing Nezumi later on in the series, demonstrating some interest in contact of that form. And indeed, in a setting like Zodion where sex is hinted at being necessary to build the world and help it survive, Shion would likely gladly partake, if to protect the world from possible ruin (as some of the dreams suggest). Shion is self-sacrificing in this way, and just as he is willing to put his own life on the line to protect No.6, he would be willing to have sex in order to help the world of Zodion.

Power:
Shion has no powers in canon, therefore I'll be giving him Mending powers, meaning the ability to heal. Well suited to someone who seeks to create a serum in order to prevent deaths from the parasitic wasps of his world.

Personality:
In the picturesque world of No.6, there are people who never question the way the system works, people who find certain things strange but who are content with the society, and then there are people like Shion. A young boy having grown up within the cushy upperclass of No.6 owing to his high IQ and extraordinary intelligence, Shion felt discontent with the world of No.6 very early on. In fact, this discontent is partially what leads him down a path that alters his future forever. The urge to scream into the torrential rain on the night of his twelfth birthday opened up Shion's life to another young man named Nezumi, and by offering Nezumi shelter and medical aid, Shion chose others over the seemingly utopian world of No.6 and thus set himself up to be eventually cast out. Despite becoming an outcast, Shion still seeks to protect No.6, or at least the people within it, and in the process, showing his courage, determination, intelligence, kindness, and a naivety about humanity that is uncommon in his world.

One of the greatest assets Shion has, both inside No.6 and outside it, is his intelligence. Owing to high IQ scores that were tested and discovered when he was very young, Shion was placed in a fast-track system early on while he was still living within No.6. This schooling system also allowed him and his mother to live in an upperclass home, living in luxury. Shion uses this intelligence many times too, one of the primary examples being his ability to attend an emergency level bullet wound as early as the age of twelve. He does this correctly the very first time, having never done it before. This intelligence also allows him to analyze situations around him, break them down with a logical mind, and thus determine the best way to handle it. He does this after discovering the cause behind the deaths in No.6, determining the details of the parasitic wasps and how they affect humans. Even after he himself is used as a host, he's still capable of analyzing his situation and from there, determines that his own blood can be used in order to create a serum.

However, this intelligence of Shion's can sometimes be a hindrance. Coupled with his sheltered life, Shion often comes off as naive, especially once he begins to live outside the walls of No.6. His scientific mind makes it often difficult to relate to others, making him blind to his childhood best friend's crush on him, even when she abruptly tells him she wants them to have sex. Even when attacked by Nezumi early on in the series, Shion shows no sense of fear, but rather analyzes Nezumi's movements and shows fascination in the other boy's agility. Shion also struggles with relating to people outside No.6, where the world is one that forces people to fend for themselves. His naivety makes it easy for others to take advantage of him, including a prostitute that seeks to lure him to bed and then take his money. Confrontations like these often show Shion's need to be "saved" by Nezumi, who often steps in to ensure others won't continue to take advantage of Shion.

Despite this naivety, or maybe because of it, Shion is a young man of abundant kindness. Even to strangers who seek to harm him, Shion is polite and courteous. To those he knows, Shion is caring. And to his world as a whole, Shion is self-sacrificing, willing to put his own health on the line in order to find a cure for the deadly sickness that's brought about by the parasitic wasps. Time and time again, this self-sacrificing and selfless nature surprises the people around him, even those that know him well, and to some extent, Shion is proud of it. He claims to be comfortable with his frame of mind, and is even stubborn about protecting his friends or the people inside of No.6.

This stubbornness is shown often, something that also catches those around him by surprise. Despite his friend Nezumi's protests and claims that No.6 is a horrible place that needs to be destroyed, Shion continuously seeks to protect it, or at least, the people inside. So determined he is to see to the safety of the city and it's citizens, Shion says he wants to bring the walls down. The very walls that enclose No.6 from the rest of the world, thus uniting No.6 with the dog-eat-dog world outside it. This determination shows itself again when Shion seeks to save his friend Safu from within the confines of No.6's most closed off detention center. He asks Nezumi to help him, who objects at first, but eventually concedes. It's this same determination and stubbornness that drives Shion to stay by Nezumi's side, despite Nezumi's assertion that if they stay together, at some point, Shion will have to be willing to kill Nezumi. Nezumi demands to know why Shion refuses to leave or keep a distance between them, and Shion responds that he is "drawn to" the other boy. He even calls Nezumi out on his behavior several times, point out the hypocrisy in the other boy's actions in comparison to Nezumi's hatred towards No.6, which gives Shion an edge at times, enough to often throw the ever competent and observant Nezumi off his guard. Finally, this determination is what helps Shion to survive, even after becoming a host to the parasitic wasps that have been the cause of several deaths in No.6, deaths that Shion was accused of committing. He fights the affects that the wasp has on his body and beats it, becoming the second person to ever do so.

Even with his stubbornness, Shion can still fall victim to insecurity and at times, loses hope. One of the key moments showcasing this is when Shion becomes aware of the change his body encounters after surviving becoming a host to the parasitic wasps that threaten the people of his world. In the novel, attention is drawn to Shion's changed hair color, skin tone, and the strange red markings that circle his body like a snake by two young children that live near the small room he shares with Nezumi. They fear him, and in order to figure out what caused their fear, Shion finds a mirror. One glance sends Shion into shock and it takes a comment by Nexumi (translated as "charming" in the anime but "sexy" in the novel) to reassure him. Shion also questions his own abilities sometimes, wondering if he really is capable of the goals he has. But when faced with Nezumi's constant cynicism, Shion grows bold and regains his determination.

With all these traits combined, Shion is a determined and kind young man, seeking to use his intelligence in order to do what no one in his world has. His goal to bring the walls of No.6 down and to save the people from the deathly affects of the parasitic wasps is one that, if it should come to pass, will change the world forever. But even though it seems like an impossible task, Shion desires it nonetheless, and it's what makes up the essential plot and theme of the anime No.6.

✖ SAMPLES:
"Zodion" First-Person Network Entry:
[ After taking a few seconds to make his way through the various menus and applications of the new device he's been given, Shion's busy flipping through towards the video. The feed comes on, giving an initial view of vivid red eyes and pale skin. But as Shion pulls back, more of him is seen, including the red line of scarred skin that caresses his cheek and wraps itself around his neck. No attention is drawn to this however, as the boy gives a bit of a nervous smile. The kind of nervous smile given by someone holding back worry and a slight panic in an effort to stay calm, collected, and in control. ]

I didn't realize I was needed in a place like this. But I guess there's no way I can go back? I need to be back to finish something. There's someone I need to save and something I need to do by spring even though this place seems already in the middle of its spring. I must be in the southern hemisphere of this world or maybe the seasons run counter to Earth's seasons, which could be due to a difference in climate and the rate at which it circles its sun...

[ He seems to catch himself mid-thought, in the midst of his rambling in order to give another glance around his new location. ]

It's very kind of these, um, gods to give us all these things. Does the worshiping actually benefit the environment? Has anyone seen it in the process? You wouldn't think that something like this would cause a world to grow...

[ Another beat and he grimaces, giving a forced and nervous laugh as he scratches his cheeks. Something like worry flickers through his eyes, though he seems as if he's trying to remain polite. ]

Anyway, has anyone seen someone a little bit taller than me with dark hair and silver eyes? He might act a bit rude, but he's actually very kind. He might also have some mechanical mice with him. If anyone sees him, could you tell me? Thank you!

"Zodionlogs" Third-Person Prose Entry:
Shion awoke with a gasp, taking a moment to reevaluate his surroundings. The last thing he could remember was blacking out during the long fall of the pit in the correctional center. He'd been with Nezumi at the time, wrapped up in Nezumi's extraordinary superfiber cloak. He'd expected to wake up somewhere inside the ominous building, not in a temple-like area that reminded him of the underground lake outside the West Block. So as he quickly stood, he cast his gaze around, lifting a hand to cup around his mouth as he called out.

"Nezumi? Nezumi!" As his voice echoed off columns of stone unanswered, Shion knew he was alone. Where his friend was, he wouldn't know until he had an idea of where he was. And the only way to do that was to start looking. He dusted himself off, and as he looked around again, he caught sight of a small dais that was circled by a ring of water. As if drawn to it by some unnamed force, Shion drew closer. It seemed innocent enough, though if it was a trap, it didn't seem to register to Shion. Soon enough, he was at the threshold, toes to the edge of the small circle of water, and even if he'd sought to stop himself, he couldn't, stepping over.

The affect was immediate. At the back of his neck, he felt a burning sensation not unlike the sting of a bee, and cried out in pain. Shion fell to his knees, hands and fingers grappling behind him for the source of the sting as panic flooded his system. Not again?! Had he been stung? Was it another wasp? His fingers searched out the area at his nape, and when he felt no lump or swelling of the skin, he blinked in surprise. It was then that he noticed the mirror surrounding him, that had risen up from the pool of water surrounding the altar in the center. In its reflection, Shion saw himself, but not as he knew he looked. The image of his naked body, making the snake-like red markings caused by the wasp's venom in his system stark and vivid against the paleness of his body. Disconcerted, he lifted up his pale hair, using the multiple angles within the circle to find what had been the cause of the sting. If it hadn't been a wasp, then what...

And then he saw it. Over the scar marking what had nearly caused his death only weeks ago was a small tattoo. The symbol was one he recognized from old text books on astronomy. Virgo. The virgin. That's right... According to old superstitions centered on well known constellations, coupled with dates of birth, he was a Virgo. But how had he been given the tattoo? What was its source? Was it given to him sometime between blacking out in the pit and waking up here? Questions filled Shion's mind as he slowly lowered his hair again. Questions he didn't know the answers for.

Still feeling in a minor panic, adrenaline from his earlier shock having yet to fade from his system, Shion looked around again. His gaze fell on the box on the alter as it now glowed with a pulsating light. Clearly, it wanted to be open. And Shion felt no need to ignore the urge. Reaching out, his fingers unhooked the latch and pulled the lid up, only for his eyes to widen again at what he found inside. A device, not unlike a phone, laid within the center, coupled with a small note. Both were quickly scooped up, the letter read, and the device pocketed. As his eyes scanned the letter, pale brows furrowed. He was needed? Chosen? But why? Even with the information given in the letter, things still did not make sense.

This led him to pocketing the letter, only to pull out the phone he'd pocketed earlier. Turning it on, and with the speed of someone familiar with that type of technology, Shion made his way through menus and postings to a network he'd found. Soon enough, some of the questions he'd had were answered, at least partially. He was expected to worship, to help this new world grow, to help it survive... That's why he was chosen? A flush of pride swelled inside him at the thought. But there was still something he needed to do. He still needed to safe Safu, return to No.6 so he could spread the word of the parasitic wasps and the danger they held. He needed to get back to Nezumi...

Taking a deep breath, Shion stepped outside the ring of water and glanced around for the path he'd seen earlier. Perhaps there would be a town nearby he could get more answers from. And as he walked, he turned back to his new device. With a tap of his fingers, the video feed turned on, and with as much composure as he could muster, he addressed whoever might be listening.
