[Series] Code Geass
[Character] Lelouch Lamperouge
[Description]
Lelouch carries himself with an air that is both regal and self-assured - his eighteen years notwithstanding. His are the violet eyes, fair complexion, and sharp features of Britannian aristocracy. And save for the dark hair inherited from his mother, he looks the part.

Long-limbed, tall (though not exceptionally so), and lanky, it’s also very easy to see how Lelouch was out-run by almost every girl in his grade level. As is expected of the contradictory Lelouch however, his hands (rough and callused) betray the long years spent performing manual labor. He is handsome and attractive by traditional standards, but he is by no means athletic. Even his wardrobe tends to favor a fragile, effeminate appearance.

[Personality]
Superficially Lelouch comes off as an indolent and somewhat apathetic teenager - normal, if a tad bit haughty. He is friendly, polite, and certainly intelligent, yet negligent towards things that have no appeal to him. His confidence and gentle charm, when combined with the warmth in his voice and smile make Lelouch an all-around pleasant person to interact with. He takes the antics of his student council friends in stride and exhibits a dry acceptance of the many events in which he is forced to participate, making it his job to provide the group with sardonic commentary. But many have observed this side Lelouch as one of aloof indifference, someone who seems cold and even distant at times. Perhaps it’s the smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes that gives his persona away, but despite its occasional transparency, this mask has a purpose.

Lelouch's mind has always been that of a tactician, one who is constantly making calculations and running through myriad possibilities regardless if the situation calls for such complexity or not. A keen individual, he is quick to deduce facts from simple, and even subtle clues. Whether his intent is military or otherwise, this thought process is also perpetual, laying the foundation for a mastermind when it comes to strategic planning and execution. He possesses genius-level intellect and a natural “talent” for weaving fabrications. This is evident in how Lelouch was able to successfully keep his alternate life as Zero hidden for quite some time, deceiving even those who were closest to him.

But it may be that the rational man on the battlefield is another front. Lelouch is difficult to understand in this regard because the line between which aspects of his behavior are real and which are not is heavily blurred. A great deal of his personality is consistent with the typical rash, angry youth and even though he manages to stay ahead of almost everyone around him, not even he understands why he does what he does 100% of the time. As much of the motivation behind his actions is rooted in thoughts and carefully constructed plans as it is in raw emotion borne of hurt and betrayal.

Most notable is his resolution. When he first acquired Geass it had become impossible for Lelouch to continue to idle by with so much injustice in the world that the moment he gained power enough to do something, he threw himself completely into it. With an apparent penchant for theatrics and poise, Lelouch is a natural born leader as Zero, charismatic as well as eloquent. He is phlegmatic in his position as overseer of the Black Knights and has no qualms whatsoever with giving out orders according to his own ideals. Stubborn, somewhat arrogant, and indefinitely willing to make the necessary sacrifices in order to reach his goals, Lelouch believes beyond a doubt that his way of doing things is the correct one and will certainly not hesitate to manipulate others into thinking so as well. Some may call his sense of morality questionable in that he is willing to ruthlessly pursue that which is most important to him, believing that results are far more important than the methods used to achieve them. It’s important to remember that while Lelouch isn't a bad person by any means, he isn't exactly a good one either.

The difference between the common tyrant and Lelouch lies with his acknowledgement that what he does is unforgivable; he never at any time distorts his personal morality to fit his actions. In fact, Lelouch’s determination is quite possibly out of self-loathing for himself, a defense mechanism against the atrocities he has committed as Zero. He accepts all blame placed on him without batting an eye, without making any attempt to justify his actions or explain himself. Even though he comes out as at the very least a redeemable person (in the truth of how Euphemia's death was a grave but honest mistake on his behalf, of how he wanted Suzaku to live on because Suzaku was his dear friend, etc.) he refuses to allow himself to be redeemed. He lies through his teeth over and over, assuming all fault and guilt in order to make things easier on everyone else. He plays the role of a beloved big brother, a reliable friend, a symbol of justice and liberation, an accomplice, an unshakable leader, a noble prince-- whatever he has to be, he becomes. It is never for himself, but for those around him.

He is not necessarily a selfless individual, although he walks his path in order to create a better world from the carnage. Rather, what Lelouch does is for his own sake and for the sake of those he loves.

In this, Lelouch is more than a little self-destructive. He survives more for his purpose than himself. Ever since he was forced to kill the only sister who knew his secret and forgave him for it, since Suzaku betrayed him so utterly and sold him out, since Shirley laid down her life for the love of him, since Nunnally was taken from him, Lelouch has let go of his worth as a person.

Perhaps his strongest trait - in that it motivates and affects him the most - is his unwavering loyalty to those he holds in his heart. He led a rebellion against Britannia out of the strong desire to see his mother's murder avenged, and to bring about a gentle world where Nunnally could finally be at peace. Euphemia, his half-sister, was close to him during childhood, and so Lelouch finds himself incapable of acting against her even when she discovers his true intentions as Zero. When it all boils down, Lelouch is a completely human person. He is someone who loves and looks out for his crippled and blind sister, someone who tries to remain loyal to his childhood friend despite how far apart life has driven them, who shows no mercy to those who have violated his views on right and wrong (himself included), and someone who has never recovered from the violent loss of his mother and the indifference of his father. In spite of his wry attitude towards the student council, it is clear that their responses to his deeds impact him significantly. As a realist, he prefers to make decisions based on logic to emotion, but when confronted with circumstances that concern his loved ones, Lelouch is more likely to abandon his own plans in favor of an approach that will not directly bring them to harm. Really, at the end of the day Lelouch is still just an eighteen-year-old boy underneath it all.

[Canon]
Born as Lelouch vi Britannia to the Emperor of Britannia and the late Imperial Consort Marianne vi Britannia, Lelouch and his sister Nunnally were banished from Britannia following the scandal surrounding his mother's death. The siblings were sent to Japan as political hostages amidst the Sakuradite conflict in response to Lelouch's abdication of his title as prince. There they lived with Prime Minister Kururugi and his son, with whom Lelouch had a rocky interaction before the two became close friends. When Britannia's development of the Knightmare Frames reached its peak and the empire seized Japan, Lelouch realized that because he and his sister could no longer be used as political tools, Nunnally's safety was no longer guaranteed. So he sought help from his mother's family and went into hiding, reverting their last name to Lamperouge.

For years, Lelouch lived at and attended Ashford Academy as an ordinary if not lackadaisical school boy, keeping secret his royal lineage in order to protect Nunnally. An avid chess player and brilliant mind, Lelouch was however unsatisfied by such a lifestyle and found himself in an internal war over whether or not his existence was justified. It was by chance that he became swept up in an underground movement, accidentally boarding a truck containing an unusual capsule. Within the capsule was a bound and gagged woman named C.C., who sacrificed herself to save Lelouch from death. Just as he was about to face execution, C.C.'s touch granted him the mysterious "Power of the king", otherwise known as Geass, which manifests in his left eye and grants him the power of absolute obedience, requiring only eye contact to make others obey his will.

With this power, Lelouch launched a rebellion against the Empire of Britannia as Zero, as mysterious masked entity who employed 'miracles' to gain the trust of the suppressed Japanese. Using his talent as a tactician in combination with his Geass he rally a small army of followers, supporters, and enemies as a revolutionary in a very short amount of time. The rebellion turned when princess Euphemia li Britannia, under an order accidentally given by Lelouch - whose Geass had by then strengthened to permanent activation - massacred the mass number of Japanese gathered at her 'Administrative Zone of Japan'. Lelouch, albeit deeply troubled and disturbed by the recent events, used the slaughter to his advantage and organized the Black Rebellion, an all-out assault on Area 11's Tokyo Settlement. It was only Nunnally's kidnapping in the midst of battle that caused the Black Rebellion to ultimately fail. Lelouch and C.C. were drawn to Kaminejima island by an enraged Suzaku, and the events that took place there (a confrontation wherein Zero's identity was revealed) eventually lead to his capture.

Brought before the Emperor of Britannia, Lelouch has his memories of Zero, Geass, his mother, and his family history erased and replaced. He is then taken back to Japan where he resumes a peaceful life as an Ashford student much like he had before attaining his powers - with a few slight twists of course. Now he possesses a brother, one Rolo Lamperouge, whose mission is to prevent Lelouch from making contact with C.C. and regaining his memories. This mission, however, fails horribly, and Lelouch is able to persuade Rolo to join his cause as well as bring the entire surveillance branch eventually under his command over time, although he outwardly maintains the illusion of not having recalled anything for the sake of Nunnally's well-being. As Zero, he allows the entirety of his supporters to escape Japan by forcing Britannia to exile them to the Chinese Federation.

Lelouch learns the Chinese Empress Tianzi is being forced into a political marriage to First Prince Odysseus eu Britannia. The wedding is orchestrated by the High Eunuchs, who will become nobles of Britannia, in exchange for turning over half their land to Second Prince Schneizel el Britannia. As the wedding begins, Li Xingke initiates a coup-d'état to overthrow the Eunuchs, but before he can free the Empress, Zero appears and takes her hostage.

Elsewhere, V.V. readies Jeremiah Gottwald against Lelouch and C.C. Lelouch successfully escapes with Empress Tianzi and the Black Knights attempt to unite with their Indian allies. Desperate to recover the Empress, the Eunuchs agree to forgive Li Xingke if he rescues her. To that end, he is granted use of the powerful Shen Hu. Kallen intercepts him with the Guren Flight-Enabled Version, but its power runs out and she is captured. Lelouch swears to rescue her, despite Diethard Reid's suggestion to retreat. Xingke demonstrates his skill as a strategist, forcing the Black Knights to retreat to a mountainside monument constructed as the tomb for the former rulers of China, hoping the Federation will hesitate to attack it. The Eunuchs turn on Xingke and his troops, having enlisted the aid of Britannian forces.
Back at Ashford Academy, Sayoko Shinozaki poses as Lelouch. Realizing the Eunuchs are not interested in saving Tianzi, Li Xingke rebels. As the Black Knights hold their ground against the Chinese Federation and Britannian forces, Zero tries to reason with the Eunuchs, who openly admit their treachery. When Xingke tries to shield Tianzi from the fighting, Zero personally enters into the field with his new Shinkirō. Diethard hacks into the Chinese media network and replays the Eunuchs' deceit, igniting riots across China. Faced with open rebellion, Schneizel orders a Britannian retreat, and Xingke eliminates the Eunuchs and rescues his comrades. However, Kallen and the Guren have been handed over to Britannia. With the Eunuchs dead, Zero forges an alliance with Xingke and Tianzi. He returns to Ashford Academy, but is surprised to find Anya and Gino enrolled as students.

Lelouch is shocked that Sayoko has made him into a playboy. As he tries to work out a way to undo the damage, Milly declares Cupid Day, where any girl can become a boy's girlfriend by stealing his hat, and to make things more interesting, Milly declares that the first person to bring her Lelouch's hat gets their club's budget increased ten-fold. Rolo and Sayoko help Lelouch avoid the female students trying to catch him. Alone, Lelouch and Shirley discuss recent events and trade hats.Jeremiah arrives in Area 11 and uses his newly-acquired Geass Canceller in public, unwittingly restoring Shirley's memories of Zero's identity.

Having recovered her memories, Shirley questions her perception of reality. Lelouch heads to the train station to check on the delivery of the G Trains, a network of Gefjun Disturber-equipped trains that will black out Tokyo once activated. Meanwhile, Jeremiah makes his move on Ashford Academy, overwhelming Sayoko and Rolo in his search for Lelouch. Jeremiah corners him, but is paralyzed by the G Train. Struggling, he asks why Lelouch betrayed the Emperor, to which the former prince reveals his motivation to avenge his mother. Having greatly admired Marianne, Jeremiah joins Lelouch's cause.

Shirley finally reconciles her restored memories, asking Suzaku to forgive Lelouch as she has. Before she can reach Lelouch, she runs into Rolo, who mortally wounds her when she reveals knowledge of Nunnally. Lelouch discovers Shirley alone and bleeding to death, and stays with her in her last moments.

Rolo admits to causing Shirley's death; rather than blame Rolo specifically, Lelouch blames the existence of Geass itself. In retaliation, he mounts an assault on the Geass Order, slaughtering every man, woman, and child within the stronghold. V.V. pilots the Siegfried in an effort to stop the Black Knights, but is defeated by Lelouch and Cornelia. He escapes to the Thought Elevator, where Charles awaits, and when Lelouch follows he is transported to the Sword of Akasha. Lelouch confronts the Emperor atop the Sword of Akasha. He learns his father has taken V.V.'s "Code," which has made him immortal. C.C. appears and reveals her wish to die, which would make Lelouch immortal as his father. However, she spares him that fate, transporting him to "C's World" to ensure his safety. There, Lelouch witnesses her past, but upon realizing her true desire, Lelouch returns to reality, proclaiming he shall be the only one to grant it. He attacks the Sword of Akasha with the Shinkirō and rescues C.C., only to find she has lost all her memories except those before receiving the power of Geass.

Forty-seven countries rally under the banner of the new United Federation of Nations, and their first declaration is war against Britannia to liberate Japan. In anticipation, the Knights of the Round and the bulk of Britannia's military are transferred to Japan. The Emperor interrupts the Federation's announcement to challenge Zero to a battle for the world itself. Fearing for Nunnally's safety, Lelouch calls Suzaku and admits he is Zero, begging Suzaku to rescue her. Suzaku agrees, but only on the condition they meet alone at the Kururugi Shrine.

Suzaku and Lelouch meet to discuss Nunnally and after some initial animosity, Lelouch manages to win Suzaku over by agreeing to stop the war. However, Schneizel interrupts and has his personal guard arrest Lelouch, making him believe Suzaku has betrayed him. Schneizel and Lelouch have a private chat, until Lelouch is rescued by Guilford, who is under the influence of Lelouch's Geass. Using the G Trains, Lelouch shuts down the Tokyo Settlement; at the same time, his reinforcements emerge from the ocean, ready to take advantage of the opportunity. With the power disrupted, the Black Knights begin their assault on the Tokyo Settlement. Suzaku threatens to use the F.L.E.I.J.A. bomb, but Lelouch, having completely lost his trust in Suzaku, calls his bluff. On the verge of death, Suzaku's Geass command activates and compels him to fire the F.L.E.I.J.A. Unfortunately, the bomb detonates over the government complex, obliterating a massive section of the settlement. Lelouch breaks down when Rolo tells him Nunnally was killed in the explosion.

A ceasefire is called so Schneizel can meet with the leaders of the Black Knights, but Lelouch is too devastated to attend. Schneizel reveals the truth about Lelouch and his Geass, as well as the many people he has used it on; a recording from Lelouch's meeting with Suzaku provides evidence that Euphemia's massacre was Lelouch's fault. In exchange for Japan's independence, the Black Knights agree to betray Lelouch. Lelouch is prepared to accept death, until Rolo, piloting the Shinkirō, rescues Lelouch and escapes the combined forces of the Black Knights and the Britannians. However, the excessive use of his Geass required to do so overtaxes his heart and he dies shortly after flying Lelouch to safety. Lelouch resolves to not waste the life given to him by Rolo, declaring he will kill the Emperor by his own hand.

As the Emperor prepares to begin Ragnarök, Lelouch and Suzaku head to Kamine Island separately to face him. No longer restrained by his notions of wrong methods being meaningless, Suzaku strikes a deal with Schneizel to become the Knight of One, in exchange for assassinating the Emperor. Using his Geass to its full potential, Lelouch takes over much of the Britannian military forces on the island. Meanwhile, the leaders of the Black Knights decide to declare Zero dead, as the truth will be far more difficult to swallow, but Lelouch's actions quickly cast doubt on their story. Anya's mind is taken over by Marianne and she restores C.C.'s memories, putting their plan into motion. At Kamine Island, Suzaku is held at bay by Bismarck, while Lelouch marches into the Sword of Akasha, through the Thought Elevator, unopposed. Knowing he cannot kill his father, Lelouch destroys the entrance, planning to seal them both inside for eternity.

Within the Sword of Akasha, Lelouch learns the truth of his mother's death from the Emperor and Marianne herself. They reveal their intention and initiate Ragnarök and Lelouch almost reconciles with them, but changes his mind upon realizing the world the Emperor desires has no future. Evolving his Geass to its next level, Lelouch defeats his father with the help of the collective unconscious mind of humanity, the personification of the "gods" the Emperor sought to defeat, dissolving his parents from existence.
