I've come to the conclusion that Joss is writing or involved with too many comics. There's so much to keep track of. Thus, Angel's comic book season six sort of crept up on me. I almost forgot it came out today.
It's sort of ironic that both Buffy and Angel are getting the canon comic treatment. Who would have thought that after all this time we would be reading new stories about these characters. I think if you talked with a teenager today they probably would have no idea about Buffy, let alone Angel. I mean, in Canada no one shows reruns, at least none of the readily available channels. So good to see Angel back even if it's only in two dimensional form.
So post-apocalyptic L.A. That was always the plan for season six, or so I read. I can't decide if Wolfram and Hart transported L.A. into a hell dimension or brought a hell dimension to L.A. Either way, poor Angel is stuck fighting a sort of perpetual battle. Wolfram and Hart are funny that way. "You want to fight evil? We'll give you evil." But Angel has a pet dragon! Hee. They could never afford that on the show.
The most interesting turn of events are actually two fold. One: Wes is a ghost. Or intangible. Whatever the case, W&H resurrected him and he's stuck in a contract with them. I actually didn't expect Wesley to come back, but I should have known better. This is a Joss Whedon show after all. Even if you're dead you can come back. You don't know if Wesley struck up a deal with them or not though. More likely not since he doesn't seem happy to be around. Or this isn't Wesley at all and W&H is playing more mind games with Angel. Two: Gunn's a vampire! No context for it yet. Either he was turned during the big fight or Angel made him one so he wouldn't die. Well, not be a forever dead. Gunn definitely doesn't have a soul since he's seen feeding on a victim. I like to think it's part of a bigger plan. Gunn and a group of guys attack this demon and take his power source.
No sign of Illyria or Spike yet. Connor, Gwen, and werewolf Nina do appear. I wasn't expecting Nina; Angel gave her plane tickets to get the hell out of L.A. I guess she hung around. Seems Connor is ferrying the humans still in L.A. to somewhere else. Or looking after them or turning them into an army.
It's a shame the Buffy and Angel comics are published by different companies. The best we can hope for is a brief appearance. So no Slayers showing up to help out. And likely no mention of Angel's fate over at Buffy. I can see why Joss decided to put season eight a year and a half ahead; you don't have to deal with Angel's situation. Also, no star treatment for Angel. I haven't heard anything about old writers turning up to write an issue. Probably because this is only a mini and not a series. For now at least.
