Just finished off the last of the first season of Heroes. Ten episodes straight; roughly seven and a half hours. I'm a bit cross-eyed now. This show definitely needs to be watched in one big sitting. So I get that the show is kind of like a comic book; a long arc stretched over so many issues, or chapters as the case may be, but that doesn't translate well for T.V. So little happens in each episode and with so many characters it's like nine separate story lines. Thank goodness the story started to pick up towards the middle of the season.
I can't help but see Heroes as an alternative version of the X-Men. It's not a put down of the show. There's only so many super powers a writer can conceive before you start to hit ideas already thought up. I do appreciate that the show is character oriented. Everyone has their respective issues messing up their respective lives. The fact that some of the characters' powers are affected by their well-being is a concept I like. Good metaphor for rising above adversity and all that.
But god help me, if I hear, "Save the cheerleader, save the world" one more time, I'm going to scream. I bet the writers were all happy they came up with a cool catchphrase for the show. Though, how does saving Claire equal saving the world? I know saving her means Sylar doesn't get her powers, but it wasn't Sylar who blows up New York City. Does Claire's presence makes Nathan realize he needs to be there for family? Couldn't Peter realize on his own that he should fly away? I mean, he learns to master all the other powers he absorbed. Of course, Peter and Nathan aren't dead. I think both actors are too popular to be killed off the show.
The best of the bunch, I thought, were Claire and her dad (Noah! Might as well gather everyone on an ark) and Matt. Claire and her dad got a great arc; actually, seeing a blond teenager save the day made me nostalgic. ;-) I liked the idea that Bennet was given this baby, one he tried to distance himself from, but in the end he did everything for her. "Company Man" was definitely one of the best episodes of the season, and not just because Christopher Eccleston appeared clean-shaved. :-D I also liked Matt because he managed to do so much with so little. Reading minds is not an offensive power, but it turned out to be a good asset.
Of course, I also loved Hiro, but that's a given. He is the average viewer, the geek watching this show and comparing the characters and their powers with characters from comics. And he also wanted to save the world, so that was a nice change.
I guess I'll keep watching when Heroes comes back in the fall. Wouldn't mind seeing more of Claude, though the writers need to give him a haircut and shave. Peter could use a haircut, too.
