I'll be honest; I thought the season wasn't as strong as last season. It was still fun to watch, though. I like that the show has a more comedic element than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sure, they crack jokes on AoS, but they never make me laugh really hard.
While this season had its strong points and its weak points, there is something I quite enjoyed:
Peggy and Daniel finally got together!! All season, the writers were doing the lame relationship stuff like introducing new love interests for everyone and having Peggy trying to decide which guy to choose and I can't stand that stuff. Yes, this is a TV show and relationships aren't always portrayed in a realistic manner on TV, but you can make the effort to avoid the big clichés. But, in the end, the writers chose Daniel, so I can overlook slightly clichéd writing. ;-) And come on, who wouldn't choose Daniel? Enver is just so pretty to look at.
Is Daniel Mr. Peggy Carter, though? I think all of the signs point to yes. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Peggy mentions in that archival interview that Steve saved the regiment that her future husband was in during the war. Daniel was in Europe during the war, so he was in the right region. I know, it's not much to go on, but I'll take it. Hey, maybe the cop that Enver played in The Avengers is actually Peggy and Daniel's grandson. Maybe we'll get some more hints in Captain America: Civil War.
Anyway, the rest of the season. Peggy and Jarvis were amusing as always. They're like Steed and Mrs. Peel from The Avengers. You get the feeling that Peggy isn't used to having close friends. Maybe that was one of the goals for the season, to allow Peggy to let people in and get close to her. But, god damn it, bring Angie to L.A.! She'd fit right in. I'm sure Howard could give her a small role in one of his movies and from there she could make a name for herself. But moving on... The show is great at showing that every character has their strengths; they don't need to be a fighter to be useful. We saw that quite a lot this season. From Ana to Rose to Samberly to Whitney Frost. It was actually really nice to see Peggy with a proper team. She spent so much of last season working on her own or just with Jarvis.
Please bring Rose back. She is awesome. Just looking at her, you wouldn't think she could take you down, but oh man, she is totally capable of kicking your ass. Samberly was fun, too. If Peggy is staying in L.A. with Daniel, then there is potential for them to be recurring characters.
The whole Zero Matter thing was less compelling than the Leviathan plot line last season. With Howard on the run and Peggy running interference to Dr. Fenhoff's revenge scheme, it was a tight story that didn't have to rely on a science-y Macguffin. Zero Matter was just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo that didn't really make sense. All of the stuff happening around that plot was interesting, but I wasn't invested in Whitney Frost's plan to do great things with this black goo. I have a feeling that Agent Carter was saddled with the Zero Matter storyline because of the Doctor Strange movie, where Zero Matter, or the Darkforce as it's also known, is a large part of that universe. For next season, they should stick to a more grounded seasonal arc and one that hopefully isn't tied to an upcoming Marvel movie.
Zero hints on the significance of the Arena Club. We get a last minute thing about how the tie pins are keys as well, but that's it. I still think that the Arena Club and the Council are tied to Hydra somehow. Are they the ones who shot Thompson at the end of the finale? Seems likely. And I'm pretty sure Thompson is dead. At that range, there's no way an assassin could miss hitting something vital.
I won't miss Thompson, in that, I neither liked him nor disliked him. Sure, he was a jerk, but he got along with Peggy when it counted. Maybe they needed to downsize the cast a bit further. It was pretty much the Peggy-Jarvis-Daniel show this season anyway.
Random: Dream dance sequence was completely random, but fun. You can't beat Evner singing and dancing. :-) I love all of the little references they have to things that we've seen in the future. Whitney makes a comment about how Howard is working on creating palladium, which is significant to Iron Man 2. Jarvis has a joke about not wanting to be a disembodied voice for the rest of eternity. Howard mentions building a facility in Malibu, which is what Tony is running in Iron Man. Everything is connected. I thought Whitney was supposed to be Madame Masque? I was expecting her to put on a golden mask at some point to hide her disfigured face. Maybe they were just using the name and none of the background. Is the show relocating to L.A. for next season? For some reason, I think it's weird fit for the show. Too much sunshine or something. Or maybe I'm just used to seeing shows filmed in Vancouver so everything is grey all the time.
Please renew this show, ABC. I don't need a spin-off from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I just want more Peggy.
