Adventures in Knitting: Baby Yoda Hat

May 04, 2015 19:13

I was hit with the whim to knit a hat for my month old niece and I settled on a Yoda hat because, well, why not. It's geeky and cute and it's never too early to introduce her to Star Wars (of which my brother-in-law is a huge fan).

It was my first hat, but it wasn't that hard to knit. Heck, I finished it Saturday after I got home from the yarn store. Of course, it helps that I used bulky yarn and big needles. The ears were super easy, too. I learned how to do increases and decreases so now I can add that to my growing knitting skill set.

This is Sigmund, hat model and baby analogue. I'm a tight knitter, so I was worried it wouldn't fit my niece's head, but once I washed the hat and stretched it over a balloon to dry, it came out the right size (and no, I didn't knit that scarf; Sigmund came with it).

A close-up of the hat. The ears got more floppy after I washed the hat, but you still get the general idea.

I was going to give the hat to my sister this Sunday, but I managed to get the hat down to her today. Seemed appropriate, since today is May the 4th. I'm sure my niece will out grow the hat as she gets bigger, but it'll be no big deal to knit her a larger one. My sister is considering the idea of dressing up my niece like Yoda for Halloween. Then she can be carried around like how Luke did with Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back. :-)
