I've discovered that there are many people I know who would prefer to surround themselves in a wall of apathy than to experience life with all its ups and downs. They seem to have developed a sort of psychological far-sightedness; I often hear these people discuss large-scale political issues and make insightful and interesting social commentary but have ignored friends' problems with drugs or personal issues.
I find that my friends, rather than creating such a social cocoon, have developed a labyrinth of rules and regulations which are applied to our interactions, specifically when we're together in a group of three or more. These rules are constantly added to and modified to serve the purposes of individuals and the group.
I guess I just wish that sometimes people would listen to me more.
