Fay: doesn’t look up from the book It’s says here you’re with Austin. Reading out of the book “’Austin - would - you - go - out - with - me?’ he asked in a rapid fire voice, almost completely stopping. Austin stared at him dumb founded for a moment. ‘Um…what?’ he said. ‘Would, would you, um, go, um, out, yeah? Um.. Please?’ Matthew stumbled out.  Austin blushed. ‘Um…yes.’ He said, confidently he added. ‘Yes, I would.’” See.

Matthew: That hasn’t happened yet, we’re still on the first chapter, I haven’t even met Austin yet.

Austin: I’m not even in that until chapter three.

Fay stares at them, and flicks threw the book again.

PW: Well why don’t you guy’s try that scene, if we’re making this in to a play.

Matthew and Austin look at each other and shrug.

Matthew: Ok. Bev shall we start from the beginning of that part?

Bev looks down at the book

Bev: Should we just start at the beginning of the chapter?

PW: What’s the beginning of the chapter.

PW Stand up and takes one of the books Matthew has. And starts flipping threw it.

PW: Ok so, some one write this down as I say it.

Enter scribe, who sits in the chair behind the desk, that PW has just vacated  and opens a lap top, she types as PW talks.

PW: Start with a dark stage.

Stage goes dark

PW: Call it scene Twelve. Put in the title of the chapter.

Scribe: Which is?

PW: “Which Is Very Short, But Includes A Surprise, A Date, Molestation And A Trip To The Tana Mart.” We’ll change it around later if we need to.

Scribe: Ok got it.

PW: OK, so um, stage is set at a table with a few loose papers and a hat. Three matching chairs sit around it.  Enter Bev. Who sits down at the table.

Spot on Bev. Who goes to sit at the table setting an over stuffed bag down next to her, Matthew follows and sits beside her. He has a messenger bag that looks mostly empty they both look over at the PW. PW has a spot on her, she’s sitting on the desk, the scribe is still behind her typing, she has the book from her desk open, and the stack of library books is on the floor beside her. Austin sits on the floor with Fay next to them. Austin has a brown backpack next to him

PW: Matthew follows, good you’ve got that, ok. Bev I want you to be reading in this part, to scribe get that down. In fact, I want you to always have a book, open, and I want you to read it at parts that don’t have you talking.

Person in all black runs on and hands a book to Bev, who open’s it.

PW: Matthew has first line.

Matthew looks at her expectantly. She hands him a copy of the book.

PW: Follow along!

Matthew flips threw it quickly. Reading out of the book and not really looking at Bev.

Matthew:  “What do you think Austin would do if I asked him out?”

Bev: reading out of the book in her hands. “Turn bright red I imagine. Why?” She looks up I need a cup of coffee.

PW: Pretend. I ‘m not ready to do a bloody dress rehearsal.

Matthew: Anyway, are we doing this or not?

PW: oh, ready for you line now Matthew, or do we have to wait longer for you?

Matthew: Haha, “I’m thinking off asking him out, but I’m new, and I don’t really know Austin that well, and well….”

Bev: “Go for it Matthew, what can go wrong?”

Matthew: “He could reject me completely never speak to me again.”

Bev: “Now don’t think like that. Go for it!”

Matthew: “Ok…”

Bev: “And look! Here comes Austin! I think I’ll just go down to Tana.” Looks at PW  Should I bring this bag?

PW: No I don’t think so, and don’t go away, for now, just come sit over here with - she looks down at Fay. Um, on the other side of the desk.

Bev nods and goes to sit on the other side of the desk as Fay. Austin stands throwing the backpack over one shoulder and picking up on of the library books as he goes, he flips threw it as he walks towards Matthew, he takes Bev’s spot and flip’s threw the book rapidly.

Matthew: Whispering Page 48.

Austin: Thanks. He flips threw landing on page 48

Fay: This is your guy’s story right? The one you where written for?

Bev: Yeah, so.

Fay: So shouldn’t you know what’s going on?

Bev: Unlike you, we were written for something one can do without an entire cast, we are our own aren’t we; we don’t need someone to “play” us.

Fay: Not any more you aren’t.

PW:  Stop it! I mean it. I can erase both of you.

Matthew:  Austin it’s your line.

Austin: dully in a monotone sort of voice. “My mother is absolutely insane, she called me last week, you know I haven’t talked to her in months! She wants me to come home.”

They all stare at him

PW: Can I get someone out here to play Austin?

Voice from offstage: NO

PW: damn it.

Austin: I take offence at that!

PW: as well you should, you’re incredibly awful.

Austin: It’s a cold reading!

PW: well fuck, just do the rest of the line.

Matthew: “Austin - would - you - go - out - with - me?”

Austin reads all of his lines in the same monotone voice.

Austin: “Um…what?”

Matthew: “Would, would you, um, go, um, out, yeah? Um.. Please?”

Austin: “Um…yes. Yes, I would.”

PW: You’re supposed to say that second part with confidents.

Austin: “ Yes, I would.”

PW: honestly. Forget about it. Puts head down in defeat.

Fay: And end scene, thank god.

End Scene One.
