darknbitter took me to see Percy Jackson and the Olympians Friday (which, since I'm going to visit my mom for her birthday on Valentine's day, I decided was my official date - it's a movie I wanted to see and he probably otherwise wouldn't have gone to).
I was quite sadly disappointed. I went in with low expectations, thinking at least it would be a fun kids-defeat-monsters movie. And to be fair, the CGI for the monsters was okay (nothing great, but not distracting either). But they
The one good thing I can say about the movie is that it wasn't until I saw a preview for it that I knew the books existed, which made me want to read them, and I've really enjoyed them. (I have a soft spot for young adult literature, I admit it. But the world is neat, and gets kids interested in Greek mythology, and I can get behind that!!!)
I don't care when movies are different from books. I don't expect movies to be as good as the book. But every single change they made took away from what made me like the book in the first place!
Hades is not the devil. The Underworld is not Hell. Percy's companions had their own purposes in life and were actual fleshed out characters. There were strong, powerful women in the book, but the movie chose to reduce their role to nothing or turn them into romantic fodder. OH! OH! OH! And can we mention that it is a HUGE PART OF THE PLOT that it is a few days before the summer solstice, and is also MENTIONED IN THE MOVIE that Persephone (who is portrayed as a slutty bitch) can't stand being around Hades so she cant wait for her spring and summer escape, and then only a few minutes later PERSEPHONE SAVES THE DAY WHILE IN THE UNDERWORLD?!?!?! Come on, at least be consistent within your own (incorrect) worldview.
How disappointing.
In other news, after 5 years of half-hearted attempts, I have conquered the wallpaper in my house. First, the kitchen - now the stairs from the living room to the upstairs. Adam requested I not start any new projects until I finish the ones I had already started - and now I have! There are still some wallpaper borders in a couple rooms, but they don't look that difficult to remove. I will never, ever, ever put wallpaper up in a house I live in. EVER.
Next stop, painting the living room!
