I stand and applaud you for the contributions you have made during your career. What better way to spend a lifetime than in teaching.

What I didn't mention is that there are still exams to be graded in January. That's one part of the job I won't be at all sorry to say goodbye to.

And the big question is: What do you plan to do with your free time? Any big tasks/goals, things you haven't yet gotten to do that you now want to tackle?

p.s. - Congrats. I know you'll miss lecturing and maybe they'll allow you some stints next year. But you've earned retirement, for sure, and that in itself is a fine achievement.

Plenty of things that I ought to be doing: the house bathroom needs re-tiling, the family room is years overdue for redecorating, all the cracked panes in the greenhouse need replacing. The list goes on and on. As for more constructive pastimes, the sweatshirt I'm wearing today may give a clue:

Now you'll have plenty of time, at least, to read all of Proust. :) Which one SHOULD do at least once in one's life.

Ah yes, I've been stalled for several years somewhere in Swann's Way. Then there's Thomas Mann (with a dusty bookmark somewhere in The Tales of Jacob), Robert Musil (ditto, in The Man Without Qualities), not to mention all those unread Shakespeare plays and the whole of 19th century English literature. Is a lifetime long enough?
