Summertime in Lisa’s mind has always been associated with new endeavors.
As a child, it was an exciting vacation outside of New Jersey with her parents and siblings, a long stay at grandma’s house or a few weeks of summer-camp, as she grew older it was an exotic trip to some new place, or a fun weekend south of the border, some place warmer than her New York apartment, and preferably with less chance of rain.
For almost a decade now summertime was returning to Universal city for another year of filming House, this place’s become sort of a second home to her (albeit a home where rooms had only three walls and often too many strangers lurking around) but a home nevertheless.
Even though she’d spent the past eight summers of her life doing this very same thing, she still felt the addictive thrill of achievement, an excitement at returning for a new season, she loved her job and she enjoyed this gig.
Lisa smiled blissfully to herself. It’s possible that she’s been enjoying it more than usual in the past recent months.
Summertime also included the introduction of new storylines for her to take on, new outrageous one-liners to memorize. Most importantly; new additions to her wardrobe choices, she was unashamedly in love with all the new, vibrantly colored tops (refusing to dwell on the inevitable judgmental remarks the dipping necklines were pound to procure from her mother, whenever she gets the chance to stop by her parents’ for a visit).
It was around noon when she crossed the parking lot heading for the studio, automatically, her eyes scanned the packed lot for a certain black and silver bike, upon finding it, Lisa’s feet unintentionally moved faster to reach the studio entrance.
They’ve been back in production for three weeks now, new cast and crew members as well as guest stars were being introduced around the set every other day, she made a mental note to pry info later from Greg about who they might be seeing this year, in all honesty, he never satisfied her curiosity, discretion being a great issue with his position, but it was still fun to try and bait the younger, Greek guy.
“Lisa, over here” She turned to spot whoever was calling.
Amanda, a young intern with the casting office poked her head outside one of the smaller rehearsal rooms, before stepping inside indicating for the actress to follow.
Lisa did, and that’s when she remembered something else about recent summers.
New child actors.
“I wanted you to meet Kayla” Amanda explained, “She is playing Rachel Cuddy this season” she smiled at the toddler playing quietly on the floor, “The sleepy one is Rylie, we shall not interrupt her nap time” she informed Lisa, nodding seriously at the small play pin where the other identical twin was sprawled on her back with a thumb stuck in her mouth.
Lisa’s natural flight response to babies began to kick in, but then she softened a little at the adorable scene.
Grudgingly Lisa admitted to herself they looked cute enough and not all that threatening, she might as well take this opportunity to bond with one of the girls before time came and some crazy writer decided it was a swell idea for her to yell at another unsuspecting baby.
“Hey Kayla, I am Lisa” setting aside her purse and script booklet, she kneeled on the carpeted floor next to the young girl, who in turn eyed her curiously.
“Eesa?” the girl asked.
“Close enough” she told the kid, they shared wide grins, it seemed things might turn out okay with this one after all, the child seemed nonplused by strangers, and oddly fascinated by Lisa’s huge earrings.
Contemplating the quite room for a moment, Lisa suggested “How about a tour of the set?”
Little arms reached up willingly, eager to get out of there.

Sharing a mostly one sided conversation, she explained where they went, while the toddler fiddled with Lisa’s hair, more interested in trying to taste the dark bangs than she was in touring the set.
“Seriously girl, if you are to carry on with this acting career thing, it’s a good idea to pay attention to my awesome guidance”
Lisa was too preoccupied with keeping the curious little fingers out of her curls; she failed to notice where her feet ended up next, until she was inside the lounge adjoining the writers’ room, the sanctuary for the talented part of their large crew, it was unusually empty except for one tall, scruffy, handsome, English gentleman.
He did a double take when Lisa walked in with little Kayla in her arms.
“Why, Lisa” he drawled with that mischievous tone she only knew too well, “Is there something we need to talk about?” he placed aside the pages he’s been reading (but to Lisa’s absolute delight kept his reading glasses on, there was something devastatingly sexy about his glasses).
His smile only widening when Lisa poked her tongue out at him.
“Kayla, this silly one is Hugh” she dutifully introduced them.
“Me?” the girl inquired in apparent confusion,
“Not ‘you’, Hugh” he tried to correct the kid, who instead turned to him in awe, obviously intrigued by the unfamiliar tilt of an accent his words carried.
“You” She agreed with the blue eyed man and reached her arms out for him, ordering Hugh silently to pick her out of Lisa’s hold.
Lisa handed her over willingly and sat down on the leather couch next to him, close enough for their shoulders to touch, but not so close to appear inappropriate if someone was to walk into the wide open doors.
“Of course, another one falls for the sexy accent” Lisa grumbled in mock irritation, “I personally entered that ‘British guys are hot phase’ after I hit puberty” she did not miss the slight blush that tinted his scruffy face.
“What can I say, the ladies can’t resist my charms” he told her with the fakest smug smile she’d ever seen.
“Oh, well, I can’t blame them” she retorted in a low, flirty voice.
His intense blue eyes zoomed on hers and Lisa felt the familiar answering tug inside her chest, she looked away first, they were in the middle of a busy studio, and she couldn’t afford to indulge her heart right now.
Instead she watched as Hugh turned to the little girl, easily making her giggle with his tickling fingers.
“The casting team realizes the adoptive daughter is not supposed to look like you, right?” he asked her suddenly.
“Neither like you, but look at her” she shot back.
Both of them paused to inspect the child perched on Hugh’s knees. Come to think of it, she really did strike a great resemblance to both of them.
“Maybe the point is to bring some comedy into the whole parenting storyline, if people were to assume the kid is biologically House’s” he suggested.
Lisa contemplated his words silently before she decided to tease him a bit.
“Well, this should give the internet something to talk about” she informed him with the straightest face she could pull, “I am personally fond of their ‘Laurie/Edelstein secret love child’ theory”
His horrified expression proved too much for her to handle. Lisa burst out laughing.
“You are kidding, right?” he asked hopefully, but then visibly relaxed when her eyes sparkled with mischief, “You are one extremely evil lady, Miss Lisa”
“Evil Eesa” Kayla confirmed, before she went back to inspecting the contents of his shirt pocket.
Both actors turned back to watch the curious little creature sitting in Hugh’s lap. Lisa wondered -not for the first time- about Hugh the father, she’d always watched him on set (For good and valid reasons of course, and not because she’d harbored some very unprofessional feelings for him for years), she’d noticed how great with kids he was, whenever a child actor was around during the past six years, the young ones instantly adored him, he was a natural.
If the fishy faces he was currently making at the girl were anything to go by.
Lisa on the other hand, children always scared her, their complete helplessness, their blind trust and dependence, Lisa didn’t think she could ever live up to such high expectations.
Her friends often shared how parenthood changed their lives, how sweet it was raising a little girl, dressing them in tiny cute dresses and hosting pretend tea parties for stuffed animals, Lisa just wasn’t sold on the idea.
Busy schedules and too much partying through her twenties meant she had no time to afford motherhood.
Her thirties witnessed a more stable version of Lisa, an improved life style with more inclination to settle down and plan for a future. But they also witnessed numerous encounters with many douchebags of the male species; Lisa became even more committed to her endorsement of Planned Parenthood.
But right now sitting here on a warm summer afternoon, in an abandoned rec room, with this cute, oblivious child, and this... well, also cute, but not so oblivious man, Lisa questioned her convictions; maybe a child with the right person was not such a crazy idea.
Maybe God did create unconditional love on this earth, and even gifted her with some of it, if the way her heart fluttered at the mere sight of this man was any clue.
They’ve only been together for several months now, but Lisa was old enough today to recognize the real thing when it came along, she had absolutely no doubts when it came to her feelings for him.
He was different in all his brooding intensity, his perfectionist complex and his brilliant, wicked sense of humor. She’s never met anyone like Hugh.
While their situation was not ideal, with all the secrecy and the sneaking around, at least until he became officially and legally a single man (British courts took their sweet time processing divorce settlements it seemed), Lisa was willing to wait as long as it took, he was worth it.
She couldn’t help but reach out her hand to caress his face, the back of her fingers running over his stubble, fondly recalling how many times she woke up with a beard rash covering her neck from his nuzzling.
She was hopelessly smitten it wasn’t funny.
Lisa needed to get up and go now before she ended up asking him something crazy, along the lines of becoming her baby daddy, she definitely shouldn’t have skipped the meditation rituals this morning.
“I have to take her back to rehearsal before Amanda thinks I went all baby crazy and stole the kid” she got up to go, but suddenly wanted the comfort of one quick peck of his lips, she was never good at resisting such impulses, Lisa leaned closer, capturing his unsuspecting mouth.
She almost giggled at his startled expression, noting the way his eyes darted to the door, checking whether they were still alone.
Next thing she knew, his lips were covering hers in a gentle familiar kiss, turning her insides into goo, his warm lips drew hers in, taking his time exploring Lisa’s soft mouth, both breathing heavily, unable to separate just yet, even though they recognized what a landmine they were stepping on, doing this in such a public part of the set.
A sharp poke via a small chubby finger attacked her boob.
“Ow!” Lisa broke free.
Their younger companion did not enjoy being squashed in the middle of two smooching grownups, and she especially did not like being ignored. They separated with a breathless laugh.
“We apologize for our indiscretion, little lady” Hugh told the girl with a wink, which she answered with a toothy smile of her own.
“Do you think she might tell someone about what she’d just witnessed?” Lisa asked nervously, as she gathered the girl in her arms, ready to go.
“I highly doubt that, seeing as she can’t so much as pronounce either of our names correctly” he assured her with a roll of his eyes at her obvious lack of baby knowledge.
“Yeah, yeah” she pouted teasingly “I’ll see you later tonight?”
“You will, have a good day, darling” He smiled up at her.
“You too, cuddle bunny”
She walked off, smirking naughtily while he winced at her unfortunate choice of pet name.

Cameras were rolling, lights glared brightly behind them. They sat waiting on the set of Cuddy’s living room; Hugh sitting next to her on the overstuffed couch, Lisa resisted the urge to slide closer to him, knowing he would be more comfy to recline against than the new couch set.
The child actor was carried on to the set by one of the director’s assistants, she looked a little different today, with the light make up they had to apply to her chubby cheeks and tiny mouth.
Lisa wondered for a moment if the reason she looked different might be because this was in fact the other twin, the one she has not met due to impromptu power naps, but then she had to wonder no more when the girl was placed in the high chair next to Hugh.
Little arms reached out eagerly for the man that Lisa secretly liked to think of as her own, and then to their mutual mortification with a wide grin, the little girl loudly exclaimed..
“Cuddle bunny!”
Hugh and Lisa groaned out, of course she was pronouncing full words now, of course she would do it while the room was packed with at least thirty people, just typical, Lisa grimaced at the idea of improvising some half assed lie for the gathered crew.
Taking back every positive thought she had recently explored concerning children and their endearing qualities, Lisa couldn’t help but mutter sourly.
“Aren’t you adorable?”
