Avatar vs. Auburn

Dec 23, 2009 12:00

Sooo, I went to see Avatar last night. It was epic. The plot was predictable and a little cheesy, but there were some interesting twists. And the effects were simply stunning. To continually fool my artist’s eye and biologist’s brain into believing that a movie that is almost entirely CG is “real” - for over three and a half hours, no less - is simply amazing. It was, as I told my father later, a sci-fi version of Dances With Wolves with an environmentalist bent - three things near and dear to my heart. I loved it.

And then this morning I get up and check my usual sites, which includes Sci Fi Wire, and find this :

The worst Avatar review ever: 'Negative 1,000 stars'

Thanks, Ben Bartley. I am ashamed to even admit that you go to the same school as me.

Also, on the subject of Auburn, I found the following conversation amusing.

Dad [watching my mother and me practice our “hook ’em horns”] “Y’all ain’t right.”
Me : “We’re for Auburn, and anyone else who plays Alabama . . . . Except LSU. I hate LSU.”
Dad : *sigh*
Me : “We are bitter and vindictive, haven’t you noticed?”

According to LJ, it has been 42 weeks since my last post. Universal implications aside, I think I should take that as a sign that my new year’s resolution should perhaps be to update more often.
