meghan1313is participating in the
Relay for Live here at CWRU over April 16 & 17 and
forming a team. For those who don't know, the Relay is an overnight walking relay to raise awareness and donations to fight cancer. Megan is organizing a team through her sorority and is participating at CWRU because CSU doesn't have a Relay yet.
The Confused Greenies are planning to do charity fundraising next spring as part of our shows in lieu of tickets. With that in mind, we've also been brainstorming how we could help in Relay for Life, especially if The Confused Greenies form a team or combine with an existing team, such as Megan's. What I'm now questioning is the fine line between helping to get needed attention and risking seemingly like we're belittling a serious concept.
For example, something The Confused Greenies does is stilt walking, though I think I'm the only currently active member of the troupe who knows how. We've been meaning to make more stilts and train for our own benefit - but this could be good for something like the Relay. I'm not sure we'd even be allowed to stilt walk in the Relay but such a thing would help gain attention. Since fundraising for the event should happen before the actual Relay, we could hold a mini-event of our own sometime, not just to get attention to our team but to the event in general. And it could help get attention to the troupe.
While I could see stilts being in good (enough) taste... I mentioned that at this University, having a Dalek as part of your Relay team could get attention and support! But... that seems risky for implications. We always risk offending people so maybe we shouldn't worry but... It's nice not to be too bad at a charity event and all. And while I think most of us would agree with the sentiment, it might be even more over the top if Skarino had a sign that said "EX-TER-MIN-ATE CAN-CER!!" ;-)
On the same weekend as the Relay, The Confused Greenies have also been asked to participate in a completely separate event off campus involving zombies. Two weeks earlier we are planning our own zombie play, Farce of the Living Dead: a Romantic Zommedia. Before thinking about the Relay, we discussed the idea of having a mini-zombie walk on campus to both get attention for our play and maybe to raise money for a charity. Many zombie walks around the country are for charity or to raise awareness for certain issues. I even think it was the idea to perform this play that prompted us to think about doing charity drives as it seems so perfect to do one for the
Cleveland Foodbank. Further research reveals other places have done zombie walks as part of Relay for Life events as well.
So... food for thought (pun not originally intended) as we in The Confused Greenies would like to take our skills and apply them to good causes but it can be a delicate balance (again, pun not originally intended).
