More RHCS again

lord_peng1 and I were discussing last night (amongst other things) ideas behind The Rocky Horror Commedia Show. Just talking things out let me bounce ideas and brainstorm. I think before I was too focused on trying to keep the story too similar to the actual play / movie. I always knew I should just keep some of the concepts and characters but change what ( Read more... )

rhps, commedia

Why does the revenge have to be RHPS based? Why can't it be you all excelling in commedia? I'm not saying don't do it, but from what I've seen (just reading your journal posts) it looks like your joint members might view it as not cool. Why make it competition for them?

Just some food for thought.

Er, like I said, this isn't revenge. I had ideas for this for at least three years and last year I said "I need to do this for next fall if I'm ever going to do it." However, Voyeuristic Intentions always ate up so much time. And it was always planned to try to do this commedia parody around the same time as the live floor show - given sharing interest and cross-publicity. However, I never expected to get banished from one of them.

And even if we were to do this we would plug the Film Society show. It's what commedia does. I would not hold it against the show. We would not schedule a time that conflicted with their show - we try hard to not even conflict with regular Film Society movies! Commedia is all about advertising for something.

Also, I never said I would be pushing for this right now. I just had discussed some possibilities and wanted to write them down while excited. Whatever happens, something with commedia will be occurring during the next two months - probably more than one thing actually.

I'm not saying it would be revenge. You would just have to spend a lot of energy into telling people that it isn't. Ya know?

It does sound like a fun show concept.

Yeah, that's my worry. Of course if auditions turn out great tomorrow and we have enough... Heh.

Thanks for the comment about the concept - I was mainly wanting to share that and see if I was totally insane or if such an idea would fly. Or in this case, strut!

See, we already had two ideas for the semester - one was a commedia parody of Hamlet. However, since we proposed this, not only is there the movie called Hamlet 2 (which doesn't bug us) one of the already established and popular theatre troupes here is doing something called Hamlette. Oops.

I will say that you will have to figure out a way to make the show accessible to all types of audiences to get an audience since both commedia audiences and RHPS fans are small groups.

Break a leg! I'm sure it'll be lots of fun.

Well, RHPS has a pretty big audience for a performance at CWRU. Not the biggest but nothing to laugh at either. It's an order of magnitude above what The Confused Greenies get on our own (at the moment). Utilizing the known name of "Rocky Horror" might help.

I was just thinking. When it comes down to commedia troupes, it's the name of the troupe that is the selling point, not the name of the show. But that only works when the group has a big enough reputation and recognition. Most plays work by the name of the show. We may have to bank on that until we make it big - and we're pompous enough to say we will. ;)

The good thing about accessibility... both have young lovers, conniving servants, flamboyant costumes, boasting braggarts, know-it-all "experts", and cross dressing. Oh and one has a sassy dancing character named Columbia and the other has a sassy dancing character named Colombina. :)
