I spent all night studying about small business start-up in NYS so that I could take payroll taxes out of what I'm paying Ami. I was in agonizing back pain by the time I finally decided what to do. Here is what I'm going to do:

1. Daydream gleefully about NYS legislators being reincarnated as laboratory rats.

2. Keep really honest records of whatever I do moneywise and hope that if it ever comes down to necessity, I will be able to hire an accountant and the accountant will be able to make heads or tails of it.

3. Consider Ami domestic help and report her as such. She does enough driving, babysitting and cooking that this is not a legal fiction, especially if we switch to paying her by the hour.

4. Save up enough money for a move to another state. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado, Arizona, California, Arkansas, Idaho, or Florida. Probably not actually Arizona or Florida.

5. Should I one day choose to operate a business, it will be a used book business, and I will not spend time in any other money-making endeavors.
