that riff that plays on the site intro from 'Leviathan' is badass!

BAY AREA THRASH GO!

anyway..

Finished Thomas More's 'Utopia' today. Fantastic satire. I was going to write up some points about it but I don't really feel like it.

I wanted to read about the Hashishim after seeing Manchurian Candidate last night, and found a book called 'The Templar and the Assassins: Militia of Heaven' by James Wasserman, which is about the similarities between the two orders.

^^

The Hashishim were a group of elite assassins active in Persia in the 1100s. Their leader, Hasan-i-Sabah, always said "Nothing is true, everything is permitted."

This statement seemed to fit perfectly with the premise of the Manchurian Candidate.

Sabah and his followers claimed to follow the Imam and were feared by both the Sunnis and Shiite Muslims. He had a mystical castle named Alamout in the moutains of Iran and supposedly had a 'secret garden' which mimicked the paradise promised by Mohammed for holy warriors who died in jihad. Anyway, the disciples were lulled into this state through a potion, which was believed to contain hashish. After spending a certain amount of time in 'paradise' the followers were given the potion again and found themselves in the castle, where Sabah would tell them that if they were to complete their mission they would be granted a return to paradise, or if they were to die while completing a mission, he would personally send angels to escort them to heaven.

Many believed that Sabah brainwashed his followers into carrying out his plans, and the group is responsible for 35 to 70 assassinations during his lifetime. He became known as the Old Man of the Mountain, and was deeply feared.

Anyway, the term assassin is said to be derived from "hashishim," which means "the hash eaters."

This is fascinating :)

My dad mentioned that in the original Manchurian Candidate, the sleepers were brainwashed to believe that they were being controlled by a group of wives sitting in a garden party. I think that this is quite interesting given the similarity between the Alamout garden and the fact that the dreamstate/redherring group of the Manchurian Candidate both involve gardens...

I'm getting to be more and more interested in things like this... that and THRASH.

ULYSSES SIREN GO!

(also, the Secret Chiefs 3 album is a concept album based on Hasan-i-Sabah)

<3 and such.
