It was a kind of mind set one got into, having taken on as huge a task as the one she had. The idea that she was completely alone was not a new one, nor that no one could be trusted to be on her side. The idea that she might be able to *do something*, that was a new one. The confidence that if she did, she would be saving millions from the schemes and plans of a corrupt group such as the one she had been submitting to for years was intoxicating.
She reveled in the idea for a while, not looking at her superiors in fear that the might see the revelry in her eyes; the signs of their own destruction staring back at them from one of their own.
She was a good general. She knew that there would be casualties, knew they wouldn't be few in number. She even knew that she would take the blame time and time again, maybe never be forgiven. She gathered people around her who she cared for, loved them like they deserved, and knew that they would be sacrificed to the cause.
It didn't matter. None of that mattered for one reason alone. If she succeeded, she could make things better. She would make things right again. If she did nothing else in her miserable existence, it would be this. She would save the world.
