Questions from
sheryden 1. If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would it be and what would you talk about?
My little brother and my parents. Family dinners are the best regardless (I'm very very close to my family, and there's a wide enough gap between my brother and I in years as well as in mindset that we don't have the normal sibling relationship), but my brother's been away from home for what feels like a long time (actually only 6 months) learning how to be a watersports instructor and I've only spoken to him a handful of times and I really miss him a lot. I want to know how he's been, what friends he's made, what he's learned and how he's enjoying it.
2. What are your favorite books from childhood?
A difficult one. I have a remarkably bad memory, and also flit between 'oh my god this is the best and most fantastic thing I have ever read/seen/experienced EVER! very easily. My parents love to reminisce about how I used to read 'Not Now Bernard' (David McKee) with them when I was first learning to read and mispronounce 'Berdant'. This was made funnier when my young cousin picked up the book for the first time a couple of months ago and pronounced it exactly the same way! :D In terms of books I remember - I had fairly early access to a library and parents who were happy for me to read out of the adult section so I read 'The Wasp Factory' (Iain M. Banks) quite young (11 I think I read it the first time) and was thrilled with it. I own three copies still, even though I mortified my GCSE teacher by writing a report on it (aged 15). I was also totally in love with the 'His Dark Materials' books, and the Illearth series - I can't remember the exact series title, 'The Chronicles of...' (Stephen R. Donaldson).
3. How many languages do you speak? Are there any you'd like to learn?
Sadly just one. It's something I consider a big failing of the UK educational system. (Though I grant there are bigger more pressing issues with it at the moment. Like people leaving not knowing their own language to any proficiency). At one point I knew French well enough to help authors translate their fanfiction. Unfortunately that time is long gone as I've spent the last few years packing my brain with other information. I'd like to think I could still go out to France and get around, but maybe not without being spat at. I'd love to get back into French, but I'd also love to learn Welsh (because that's where I'd most like to be working in a few years and while I know it's not technically required it would be nice), Japanese and sign language. The latter particularly because while English is widely spoken deafness is isolating and the more people who can communicate the bigger the world is.
4. Who are your three favorite underused characters from fandom and why?
Maggie (leverage) - she's a character you could so easily hate given how Nate was when we first met him, and yet all that ended up happening when we met her was us all (and all the primary characters) falling desperately in love with her. She's a strong character who's been through a lot and yet still has that sharp intelligent humour about her. And she's freaking gorgeous, besides... I'm not complaining about her underuse, I'm just saying that she's my favourite. We don't want to overuse Maggie, she's got a lot of power over all of them.
Clinton Jones (white collar) - we were PROMISED JONES IN THE NEW CREDITS AND HE'S STILL NOT THERE!! *sulks* I was right there with Jones when he quietly but firmly stated how unhappy he was that Diana and Peter had been keeping things from him. He's there as backup, he can't do that if they keep secrets. So we don't know everything there is to know about Jones, but he's loyal to Peter and he isn't hard on Neal except when he thinks Neal needs it, and since Neal saved his life there's been that extra level of respect that I've really enjoyed watching between them. I don't know exactly, but there's something about Jones.
Penelope Garcia (criminal minds) - I love that TV is now capable of showing off women who break the mould, who aren't suited and booted and are capable of kicking ass digitally. I love the way she dresses, the way she speaks and the way she interacts with her collegues. I HATE - let me repeat HATE - the moronic 'I'm a geek too so you can love me' guy they've paired her with (even though it's Xander). It's like they've done all this mould breaking and then they've gone... but she's a geek, she can't possibly fall in love/maintain a relationship with someone handsome and suave. I'm not going to say she should be with Morgan (while that would be nice, Morgan has his own issues) but really, CM? Really? A stuttering stumbling clearly inferior geek? *ahem* Sorry... got a bee in my bonnet over that one.
5. What kind of music do you listen to? Any favorite bands or musicians?
I have what you might refer to as an ecclectic mix of music. There is nothing I don't have in my collection as far as I know (I'm a bit short on late 80s early 90s, but that's because the music was pretty poor round about then...) but I'm always looking for new things. I'm working to expand my global music collection at the moment.
My favoutites are changable, but a couple of bands/musicians/artists who have stayed with me for a long time are Alanis Morissette, U2, Sting, Alison Krauss, Bjork, The Cranberries, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow...
Current favourites?
Tim Minchin, The Feeling, Scouting for Girls, Apocolyptica, Breaking Benjamin, Switchfoot, +44, 30 Seconds to Mars...
Questions from
jesco0307 1. What is your morning routine?
Generally - groan at first alarm clock, knock everything off my bedside table trying to turn second alarm clock off, get out of bed on third alarm clock and check emails and Friends page. Read any new fic on friends page, realise I don't have time for a shower despite kinda needing one, throw some clothes on and bolt for the train. I have to admit, I generally miss the train.
2. If you could choose freely, where would you want to live and what would you do there?
There's this little village called Rhandirmwyn in Wales, it's just about bike-commutable distance from a little town called Llandovery. I would happily work in a teashop or in the bakery in Llandovery, regardless of my prior training, just for that location. I love it there, and spend as much time in the campsite as I can spare already.
3. What kind of animal would you be?
What *kind* of animal? A small one that hides at the sound of danger, likes small dark spaces and quivers if you pick it up. A mouse maybe, or a squirrel - I do like climbing.
4. What are 5 things that put you in a bad mood?
- People who think everything in the world is laid on just for their benefit and can't see other peoples' points of view.
- Realising I've misjudged a situation for whatever reason (generally because my social skills are sub-par) and I'm going to have to explain to someone that I'm an idiot that doesn't know how to interact with other human beings
- People who read things which are headed with specific warnings and then flame for said content. Flamers in general.
- Also poorly spelt/punctuated/grammar-corrected reviews. I put those in with flames - I don't care if that makes me a grammar Nazi. Reviews generally mirror the quality of the writing, and that says horrible things about my writing. (Which is not to say my spelling/punctuation/grammar is perfect, but hopefully it's showing improvement, lol)
- Films/TV/fic with fantastic premises which don't deliver, or *almost* deliver, making you watch/read just in case it starts to improve.
5. Which 3 celebrities would you like to meet?
Hard one. Very hard.
I think James McAvoy would be a guy to have a geeky fanboy conversation with, especially on X-men based topics. I want to grill him about how he thinks Charles will deal with the immediate fallout of his injury because I can't decide which way I want to write it, and I'm sure he's thought about it some.
Jon Rogers appears to be an absolute legend, just being in proximity to him I could absorb some of his awesomeness.
And Seb Roche, because I want to talk climbing with him and having a geeky yet entirely off-topic conversation with a celeb would be fun. :D
