Fic: Touch Without Fear

Author: LMX

Comment fic for jynx.

Now they can finally touch without fear, Rogue is shocked when Gambit turns around with a sheepish grin and bows, kissing her hand in that way that she has never been able to decide was either patronising or flattering. She feels herself blush regardless, it had always been a gloved hand before and that made all the difference. Of course, even while the tingling of lips-to-skin contact persisted, Rogue couldn't understand why he didn't just *kiss her*, damnit!

And then he turned and walked away. Just strode right out of the door like he had places to be.

Rogue screamed and cried and BROKE THINGS until she felt a little better, and by that point she had gathered a little crowd, so she glared at them until they'd mostly left. Bobby stayed - god bless him - steeled himself against that glare and hugged her, kissed her forehead and suggested creative ways for her to get her own back on the Cajun.

Gambit stayed gone for six days, and Rogue waited. She spent those days touching people, hugging and holding and wearing as little as she liked in public places.

When Remy reappeared, Rogue took him by the lapels of that damn coat and dragged him through the mansion to her room. Standing by the door to prevent any kind of escape attempt, she stood with her arms crossed while Remy looked everywhere but her eyes. She waited, and glared, and eventually - as she always knew he would - he cracked.

He told her about the disease in him, and how long it had been since it had been safe for anyone to be with him, and how much he loved her for being safe for him, safer than any other girl, and how he loved her for so much more than that but how he understood that now she would find someone else. Someone who could love her more, and in that way.

Rogue had cried, then, but she hadn't moved away from the door. She could see the fear in Remy, and the pain, and she fought with the weight in her own chest at the thought that she had been deceived in this way. She had thought Remy was being selfless for her, that he loved her enough to wait. But he loved her, she knew that much, it was evident in the way he held himself now, standing in front of her and telling her that even though he loved her, he would let her find someone else if that is what she wanted.

And she loved him. She loved him so much.

"We don't need that." she found herself saying, pushing aside tears, and in the same breath knowing what she was saying was true. "We don't need anything but us, sugar."

That night they shared a bed for the first time, and though Remy lay tense and afraid, Rogue knew it wouldn't be long before she nursed that fear out of him.

Remy was afraid of his own touch. Rogue could relate.
