When Adelle had first met Topher Brink she had thought him a marvellous tool.
Young, mouldable and morally disaffected. He was perfect for what she needed.
When he fell to her affections like a motherless child she felt a thrill of joy unlike anything she'd ever known. She never thought that thrill might be maternal love until things started falling into place around her and he started falling apart within himself.
He clung to her then, as his genius was turned against him by the corporation, and while she knew this moment had been in the plan since she met him, she suddenly felt the need to protect him from it all.
She felt herself reach out to him in those last days, and when he went to die, she thought that maybe she might have lost something truly worth something to her.
