First attempt at a Boukenger fic.

Ok... after reading some Boukenger fic yesterday, I am inspired to write something of my own. I'll give myself half on hour to write what I can.

The time now is 23.04

Ready... start up!

UPDATE: OK, 23.04 is over, but i'm still not done. Gonna continue writing anyway.

Masumi slammed his fist hard against the door and promptly cussed at the pain that shot up his hand. Damn door. And damn that Akashi! They knew exactly what they were getting into when they signed up, well, maybe not quite entirely, but in any case, he he did not have to treat them like little children trying to play with grownup toys. Masumi raked his fingers agitatedly through his hair, letting out a hiss of breath he had not even realised he had been holding. So the GoGo Drill had a chance of harming their bodies, but there was also that it would not.

'He's only trying to protect you.' Masumi recalled Sakura trying to help rationalise Akashi's actions. Right, Sakura-Neesan. He just does not trust us. And that was what stung the most. Akashi might not have trusted them, but somehow, he had won Masumi's trust almost right from the get go. Masumi had joined the Boukengers for the Precious, but also in part, drawn by their charismatic leader, Akashi Satoru, the Immortal Fang, widely known in the treasure hunting circles as the man who never lost anything he set his sight on. Masumi had known from the start that this was a man he wanted to surpass, to prove himself the best treasure hunter in the world.. And so, he had challenged the Red ranger in a bid to join as test recruits. They made it past the inital training and he finally found himself working alongside the man he viewed as his rival.

For some reason, Akashi rubbed Masumi the wrong way. Maybe it was the easy assurance he seemed to carry and the authoritative presence he so unconsciously wielded, one which Masumi somehow had an instinctive desire to rebel against. The man behind BoukenRed was cool and  collected under pressure, a professional, someone that Masumi found himself instinctively grudgingly admiring and respecting as they worked together. Akashi had unconsciously begun to win Masumi over as a leader he could follow in spite of the fact that Masumi was not easily given over to trusting people, something that irked Masumi to no end.

Belying the cool surface was the glint in his eye that appeared when they talked about adventure hinted at a wilder streak, a fiery passion boiling just beneath the surface. The two contrary sides of Akashi's nature confused Masumi more than he liked to admit. What worsened the case was that  Akashi was also someone not given to explaining his actions, who kept his thoughts to himself. Akashi was a man Masumi did not quite understand, a person whose actions were unpredictable. It made Masumi feel insecure, unsure of where to step in dealing with their enigmatic leader. Masumi hated the feeling, which probably only serve to heighten his rebellious behaviour, going against the man at every turn. A sarcastic barb here, the hint of insubordination in carrying out orders just that little bit differently. Masumi was certain that he was going to be kicked off the team at any moment, yet Akashi never did anything to suggest that his removal from his post was likely.

The first mission they undertook as a team was the retrieval of the Goadom Heart. It was then that Masumi tried to turn his back on the team and make off with the Precious. Of course, things never went smoothly for him and so he found himself dangling off the edge of a narrow overhang, nothing but sheer determination keeping him from perishing in the molten depths of magma looming underneath. When Akashi took the plunge down to his level, Masumi's cynical mind immediately surmised that he had come to laugh in his face. Who would not? Afterall, Masumi had made a complete ass of himself, his attempt at leaving the others in the dust a total failure. His already precarious grip slipping, Masumi was seriously worried for his life, although pride made him retort bitterly in a way that was not likely to endear him to a would-be rescuer. As should be expected, Akashi knocked Masumi off the cliff and for the brief moment, Masumi felt true terror as he saw his life flash before his eyes-- just before he found himself still alive and suspended from the cliff, the rumpled collar of his jacket clenched within Akashi's fist. Surely Akashi was not going to pass up this chance to mock Masumi.

Yet Akashi did the unexpected. He offered Masumi the choice to rejoin the Boukengers or to fry in the magma. No mocking, no taunting, just a simple chance for another shot at life. What Masumi felt at that moment was probably equal parts gratefulness and mortification.  It stunned Masumi that he was not left for death, that he was not being laughed at as the other treasure hunters he once worked with would surely have done. This was probably the beginnings of the first stirrings of the trust he had in Akashi, trust which was built upon by subsequent missions, in which he saw a man who genuinely cared for his comrades. He was secretly touched that while Souta and Sakura were still doubtful of him upon his rejoining of the team, Akashi seemed to have pushed the incident to the back of his mind. And that completely embarrassing confession of sorts when Natsuki almost quit the Boukengers showed that each member was important to him. Masumi still baulked at the commanding tone that Akashi used, he would probably continue to defy the man every chance he could, and the undercurrents of rivalry made it hard for a friendship to develop, but somehow, he had come to see Akashi as a leader he could trust with his life. And the feeling was still not mutual.

He clenched his fists tight in anger and the throbbing of his hand informed him of the bruise that was brewing from his attempt at releasing his rage. Which also brought him back to the problem that Masumi still had not solved the problem of winning Akashi's trust and now bore a truckload of resentment and frustration he had yet to get rid of. How  then should he get back at Akashi? His resources were limited, Souta and Sakura would not likely to aid him so he at most had help from Natsuki, who was not likely to be of much help anyway. No amounts of insults would ruffle the man. As he stewed upon the possibilities, the perfect payback came to mind, a small prank that would not dissipate all the anger, but could at least make him feel better. Yes, he decided after a few more moments of deliberation, this was going to be good. Masumi rubbed his hands together in anticipation as he set off on his merry way to collect the things he needed, as well, an icepack for his throbbing hand.

Phew, done. Time now is 0037. I'm such an impossibly slow writer... Ah well, at least I enjoyed writing this. Hope to write more about Masumi's views on Akashi, maybe for after/while waiting for  Akashi to rescue them in the same task, task 6, task 9 and 10, task 13 (about how well he knows each character). Maybe some Natsuki (on how Masumi is really a big softie inside), Souta (on chiefu especially for task 10, maybe slight jealousy of how easily Akashi picks up pet projects- Masumi, Eiji... hmm... maybe that can contrast with this one as ) and Sakura (on how much she loves ciefu, how worried she is for him, and that they should be together :) ) and Akashi's own reflections on his own actions (the REAL reason why he led everyone on a wild goose chase. To help them realise a love of adventure so that they can look for their own treasure) Yes, yes, feeling happy now. Really liked yesterday's fic about how Souta was blaming himself for ruining lives and how Akashi inspired him to hope...

それで。またあした。
