Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir

by Cyndi Lauper with Jancee Dunn, Atria Books, 2012.

I picked this book up at the library. It was somewhat interesting, and includes stories of Cyndi's life, but it did get a little too detailed for my tastes on the production of Cyndi's music, and less on personal life. Don't get me wrong--you'll certainly learn things you didn't know about Cyndi's life (her abusive stepfather, the time she was raped, her past relationships, the origins of her support for gay rights, etc.). But I was left wanting to learn more about certain aspects that I would've thought she would have covered in more detail. It took her a long time to get married, and I assume her husband is the love of her life, but she spends more time talking about her relationship with her boyfriend/producer Dave Wolff than her current (and now long-time) husband. She experienced bouts of gynecological troubles and had a hard time getting pregnant, and yet she barely talks about her son. At one point she talks about how celebrities often aren't what they seem, and implies that she comes off harsh at times (not having a "filter" on what she says). After having read the entire book, I'm still not sure if she's someone I would like in person, and I get the feeling that she admits that her fans wouldn't necessarily like her in person, even though she loves & respects them.
