“Why can’t I go with you?” Vala whined as she watched Daniel
pack up books and files into his duffel bag.
“I’m going to be busy,” he replied. “And you find research boring.”
“It’s because they won’t let you take a guest, right?” Vala said,
completely ignoring his rational explanation.
“I’m not going on a vacation,” he told her. “I’m going to Atlantis.”
Vala walked over to the computer where Daniel was stuffing his
bag full of research papers. She sat on the edge of the desk.
“I really didn’t get to see the sights last time we were there. You
had me cooped up in that room talking to the hologram that really
wasn’t a hologram. If I had seen more of the city, I’d be content
to stay here.”
Daniel looked at her and resisted the urge not to roll his eyes.
“You weren’t invited.”
“You could take me along as your research assistant,” she
suggested.
“I’m going to have Rodney helping me,” he said. “Nice try.”
“Oh, who was that other guy I met?” She looked up at the
ceiling, as if it could reveal the answer. “Messy dark hair.
He was cute.”
“Colonel Sheppard?” Daniel said.
“Yes,” she replied. “Maybe I could hang out with him.”
“I’m sure Colonel Sheppard is a very busy man,” he said.
“I’ve never met a man too busy for me,” she replied. “Well,”
she said a few seconds later. “Besides you, but then you are a
little bit wonko.” She put her index finger against the side of her
head and twirled it.
Daniel sat down at his chair and printed some files out from the
computer. “Considering your ego, maybe you should hook up with
Rodney.”
Vala ignored his comment and kept insisting. “What if you get
into some dangerous situation? I could be there to protect you.”
“I think the only danger I’ll be exposed to is eye strain and
fatigue,” he concluded.
Daniel took the papers off the printer and shoved them into his
duffel bag. He shut the computer down and checked his office to
make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything.
Vala followed him. “Can you at least bring me back a souvenir?”
she asked.
“Like I said, this isn’t a vacation.” He zipped up his duffel bag.
“Okay, but I get to use your computer while you’re gone,” she
said.
“Vala, you do have a laptop,” he reminded her.
“But yours is better,” she told him. “Besides, I need to update my
blog.”
“Okay, but no -“
“I know. No looking at pictures of naked men,” she finished.
“I remember.”
Daniel slung his duffel bag over his shoulder and picked up the
suitcase by his door. “Okay, I guess I’m ready.”
She followed him to the door. “I could be ready in ten minutes.”
“No.”
Vala pouted. “Everyone else gets to go off base and have fun and
I never get to do anything.”
Daniel sighed. “All right, when I get back we’ll go do something
fun.”
“Really?” she said, her frown disappearing. “What?”
“Well, that would spoil the surprise, wouldn’t it?” he told her.
“As long as this isn’t a trick and you’re not taking me to a library
or a museum . . .”
Daniel tuned her out. He wondered if he’d ever get out of here.
She just kept on talking and talking. He looked as his watch; he
needed to get to the Gate. Dropping his duffel bag and setting
the suitcase down, he went over to Vala and kissed her swiftly
on the lips. She was too stunned to say anything and he used
that as his chance to get away.
Hurrying down the hallway, Daniel knew he’d pay for this one
way or another when he returned. But he was surprised to find
he was looking forward to it.
