“A Passion for Learning” (1/1)
by Lisa Michelle
Vala stood at the doorway of Daniel’s office. She saw him
sitting on the floor surrounded by lots of books and papers.
He didn’t see her as he was staring down at a book and comparing
it to a old piece of paper he had in his left hand.
She stepped inside and saw that the table as well as his desk
was covered with similar old books and papers as well. She
guessed he had run out of room.
“It looks like you’ll need a few more minutes,” she said.
Daniel looked up at her. “Yes. Didn’t I just tell you that -“
“A few minutes ago,” she replied, finishing his thought. She
looked at her watch. “That was an hour ago, darling.”
“It was?” He glanced at his watch. “I didn’t realize it was
that late.” He returned his attention to the paper in his hand.
Vala stepped over books and made her way over to him. “It’s
too late to do anything, anyway.” She sat down next to him on
the floor. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Are you just saying that or do you really mean it?” he asked,
turning a page in one of the old texts.
“A little of both,” she replied. Ever since she and Daniel had
become a couple, she had taken a backseat to his work. It was
frustrating at times, but she knew how important it was to him
to be able to translate an important document, find the location
of a possible ancient civilization or any number of things that
seemed to be found in one of his books.
“Look at this.” He picked up a piece of paper that was inside
a big Ziploc bag. It had turned yellow and was missing a good chunk
at the bottom. “How can I translate the rest of this? Did they even
look around for the rest of it?”
“I’m sure SG-3 did the best they could,” she told him, trying
to ease his frustration. “Besides, General Landry can’t expect
you to translate something if you don’t have all of it in the first
place.”
Daniel didn’t look convinced. “Yes, but it could be an important
key to what this document is.”
“What is it?” she asked.
“I’m not sure,” he replied. “It seems to be a document with
the laws of a civilization, but I can’t make out the specifics.”
It was almost eleven o’clock and this was about the last place
she wanted Daniel to be. However, it didn’t look like he was
ready to go to bed anytime soon. “I know what I can do to help.”
Vala jumped up and left the room.
Ten minutes later, she returned with a cup of coffee and a
Milky Way. “You probably haven’t eaten in awhile.” She
offered him the coffee and candy bar.
Daniel looked at it as if he hadn’t seen food before.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“I wasn’t sure what you meant when you said you could help.”
He took the coffee and candy.
“Did you think I would come back in my underwear or something?”
she said.
“Maybe. I wasn’t sure.” Daniel took a sip of the coffee.
“We’ll save that for later.” She winked at him.
“Good. I don’t need any distractions,” he told her.
Vala smiled at his remark. She was glad she could distract
him from his work. “Make any progress?” she asked as she sat
back down next to him.
“No, not really.”
Vala sighed, as if she’d been the one working on this. “You
might just need a little break.”
“No, I’m fine,” he told her.
“Well, if you didn’t like studying and learning so much, you
wouldn’t have this problem,” she said.
Daniel stopped everything and glared at her.
“And by problem I mean the wonderful problem of having
to figure this out,” she clarified. “Which might lead to a fabulous
treasure.”
“Nice try,” he said. “It’s not treasure.”
“Oh, okay.” She lost his attention again as he returned to the
books. There was no way she was going to win this round. “Well,
it’s late and I’m tired.”
“Okay,” he said. “Thanks for the coffee and candy bar.”
“I’ll be in your quarters tonight just in case you decide to
finish early,” she told him. “And I’ll be naked.”
Daniel was still engrossed in one of the old tomes. She leaned
in close to him. “Did you hear me? I said naked. How’s that for
an incentive?”
“It’s a good one,” he agreed.
“But you’ll probably be here all night, right?” she asked.
“Probably.”
Vala kissed him on the cheek. “Good night, darling.” She got
up and headed for the doorway.
“I’ll make it up to you,” he said. “I promise.”
Vala turned around. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said. “And
don’t worry, there will be no studying or books involved at all.”
She managed to get a smile out of him before he returned to his
work.
