“I’m really sorry I can’t make it, hun,” Paige croaked from within her cocoon of sheets and bed covers.

She was sick again. Or maybe it was still? She couldn’t be sure at this point, and to be honest, she felt too crappy to care. All she wanted was to sleep for a week.

Alex shrugged. Not because her girlfriend could see it from the bed of course, but because it was her standard response whenever she didn’t want to let on her true feelings. There was no denying her disappointment; she’d been looking forward to this party pretty much all week, especially after Paige had told Sean she’d go. Alex couldn’t remember the last time she and Paige had partied together, and for once it wasn’t because she’d gotten too wasted to remember her own name. It had simply been too long ago.

“Whatever, Paige,” she replied nonchalantly, “it’s cool.”

Which meant it wasn’t, and they both knew it. But Paige did not have the energy or the willpower to argue, so she just groaned a weak reply and wrapped the blankets around her fevered body more tightly.

Alex finished getting ready in silence. She wasn’t sure why she was making such an effort to look hot now that she knew Paige wasn’t coming with her. But she’d already started doing herself up-well, as done up as Alex Nuñez gets, that is-and she wasn’t about to quit halfway through.

“Lexi, can you get me some more water?” Paige mumbled just as Alex was busy stuffing her feet into her boots.

“Yeah, one sec.” Alex rolled her eyes. She had no patience for sick people, and she didn’t make exceptions for Paige. She grabbed the empty glass off her nightstand and went into the bathroom to fill it, not even bothering to check if it was cool. She carelessly placed it back on the nightstand, spilling a little as she did so.

“Thanks.” Paige’s acknowledgment was too muffled by blankets for Alex to catch the irritated edge to her voice.

“No prob,” she hurriedly replied. “I’m gonna miss my bus, I’m gonna head out now.”

An arm snaked out from the shambled pile of quilts and reached out for her. “Hug me goodbye?” it asked feebly.

Alex sighed and walked over to the bed. This was not Paige at her finest. Her cheeks were flushed, her skin clammy and sweaty, and her hair was damp and matted to her face. Alex grimaced and leant down to hug her girlfriend. She was boiling hot and Alex could not understand why she felt the need to be bundled up in so many blankets. When she felt Alex start to disengage herself from their embrace, Paige moaned and pursed her lips up a little.

“Ohhhhh no,” Alex shook her head as she let go. “I am so not kissing you. You’re all sick and nasty.”

Paige moaned another feeble reply and rolled over.

“I’ll be home late,” Alex mussed her girlfriend’s hair, eliciting another sickly groan from the depths of the bedlinen.

Alex dashed down the stairs, not wanting to be any later than she already was. She quickly picked up her wallet and keys from the table in the foyer and checked to make sure she had her bus pass. Hopefully she hadn’t missed that bus. When her hand touched the door handle, words Dylan had said to her a few days ago flashed through her mind.

Paige is always tired and exhausted from working and school, and her one main support is out getting wasted...

A wave of guilt passed over her. As much of a jerk he had been lately, the guy did have a point. Granted, Alex didn’t have any intentions of getting wasted tonight, but the fact that she still planned on going while Paige lay sick in bed had just proven Dylan right.

Sighing, Alex took out her cell phone and flipped it open. “Yeah, Sean? Hi, it’s Alex… Look, I’m not gonna be able to make it tonight… Yeah, I know, I’m sorry. I think I’ve caught whatever Paige’s got… Yeah, for sure. I’ll give you a shout tomorrow sometime. Bye.”

Tucking the phone into her back pocket, Alex wandered into the kitchen and began searching through cupboards. She eventually found what she was looking for: a package of chicken noodle soup mix. She poured the contents and some water into a saucepan and set it on the stove. While it boiled, she assembled a tray with a bowl, spoon, a glass of ice-cold water, and some soda crackers. When the soup was done she transferred it to the bowl and carefully carried the tray upstairs. Paige was still curled up in bed with her back to the door when Alex walked into their bedroom.

“Are you awake?” she asked softly. “I made you soup. Are you hungry?”

Paige turned over and peeked out from under the blankets. “I thought you were going to Sean’s?”

“I changed my mind,” she replied meekly. “I was looking forward to spending a night with you, and if that means spoon-feeding you soup and crackers, then that’s what I want to do.” She laughed a little.

Paige smiled and sat up in bed. “I’m glad you stayed, Lexi. Even if you did call me nasty.”

“Sorry about that,” Alex grinned. “But you really have seen better days…”

Paige playfully rolled her eyes and patted the empty spot next to her on the bed. “Just shut up and feed me soup!”
