Writer's Lament

Mar 01, 2011 19:49

Hey, Inspiration? You can come back now... anytime... come on...

...Please?

Gaaaaah. I hate it when I desperately want to have written, but desperately don't want to write. I can barely get anywhere near writing mode right now. Part of it's probably that this term is nearly over and I've got a lot of other stuff to do so I have less time to coax ( Read more... )

Procrastination...one of the most dangerous self-manufacturing drugs to the human race. You WANT to write, you'd LOVE to write, you can't WAIT to write, an' yet you...don't.
One of the reasons I decided never to write. I never even got off the ground with it. So I try to make up for it with 'detailed' reviewing of other people's stories.

I KNEW that Pokemon was no good! Even I, who normally detest mainstream stuff, got hooked on it as well. When the Japanese set out to create a product, they sure know how to overdo it. Pokemon is TOO addictive, even in terms of addiction.

An' now, I'd like to apologise for bein' out of contact for so long. I've been burying myself in the Discworld. Wanted to get all the way to Unseen Academicals before I get started on the Science trilogy(I Shall Wear Midnight isn't out in Singapore yet)

Here's the list of books I've finished since I last commented here:

The Last Hero
I enjoyed readin' this from beggining to end. One'a my top three favourite characters, Rincewind(sadly, the Luggage only had a cameo...), the hilarious illustration of Conan givin' the Discworld Gods the one-finger salute, Leonard's insane inventions, an' most of all the transformation of the bard throughout the book. I wish the rest of Pratchett's books would get illustrated versions like this one.

The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents
When I first started, bein' aware of the Younger Reader's Label, I just wanted to read it through word-for-word, page-for-page, an' get to Night Watch as fast as possible. Wrong again. The ending of the story was so damn well written. This ain't a children's book. No children's author would bother to put so much real-world lessons into his works, considering his readers. An' I KNEW that, bein' about rats, that a CERTAIN SOMEONE would show up sooner or later...

Night Watch
Commader Vimes proves that streetwise is the best kind of wisdom. The kid Nobby, the birth of Dibbler's nickname, the intense confrontations within the secret police headquarters, a young Vetinari(what a cool guy...), an' Vimes demanding that the deaths of his comrades not be glorified, because it'll only lead to more glorified deaths.
Futile revolutions...makes me think. Alla those people in Libya right now, screaming for a new leader...do they have any idea what they're really shouting for? Or do they truly want to take down one monster an' replace him with another?

The Wee Free Men
The first of the Tiffany Aching series. A preteen girl as the protagonist didn't strike well with me at first, but I've changed my mind since then. The return of the Nac Mac Feegle since Carpe Jugulum...nice.

Monstrous Regiment
Reminded me of the pointless, never-ending wars in the Balkans. Wars fought because of previous wars. No real reason given or needed. Countries grounding themselves into the dirt and not caring about it, just so long as they could continue slaughtering each other.
I was thoroughly exasperated by the revelations about the squad at the end of the book. Don't wanna spoil any future readers, so I'll just say I wasn't THAT surprised at the end.
The one place to steal women's clothing in an army camp...uh-HUH.
"Could you hit me over the head too?"
Otto Chriek. Simply love that guy. He really needs to get a better camera.

A Hat Full Of Sky
Thank the Lord that Tiffany managed to get rid of that hiver. A person of her potential, being able to Borrow an' Vanish at her young age, becomin' corrupt...good thing ol' Esme was around to help her out.

Going Postal
Von Lipwig's debut in Discworld. He's a schemin', lyin', show-offin' bastard...an' we love him for it. Vetinari is a genius. Send a rat to fight a rat. Nice to see Sacharissa too. Wedding ring, eh? Poor William. He has no idea what he's gotten himself into. And DAMN can Pratchett write an ending!!

Thud!
I. Friggin'. Love. This. Book. I goddamn love it.
This has got to be one of the best Discworld novels to focus more on the characters than on the story. For a dude, I absolutely enjoyed the Girls' Night Out moments. I also couldn't stop grinnin' while readin' Angua's paranoia an' bitterness upon a certain long-named someone joinin' the Watch. In fact, I grinned so much that my officer asked if I was alright.
Near-Vimes experience...Death is the Coolest Guy Ever.
"WHERE'S MY COW!!!???" Hahahahahah!! Terry Pratchett, Master Comedian.

I am now about to finish Wintersmith. I have a feeling that what Weatherwax sees in Tiffany is the person who is goin' to take her place as the Most Powerful Witch In The World. She got an ELEMENTAL to fall for her, for chrisakes.

Once I finish readin' all the novels, Llybian, I will proceed to review yer Slayers/Discworld story. I keep wishin' that it would have more Discworld characters interactin' with the Slayers, but I guess ye did what ye could with it. After our last lil conversation, I imagined Amelia having tea with Death an', recently, seeing her delivering her infamous Justice speeches in front of a whole group of pointy-hatted females an' several hundred tiny blue men. Now THAT'S one princess they won't find themselves prepared for.

I have been readin' the Discworld series since August 2010, and they've been and still are a wonderful experience for me. Terry Pratchett is truly Fantasy's Best Author. He won't be the Greatest, because the World will never work that way, but to me he'll always be the Best. Rowling should NOT have beaten him to No. 1. What a goddamn injustice...

Wow, you're really moving through them quick! I know I pretty much couldn't read anything else if there was a Discworld book yet to be read XD

Even in the midst of my love for the game, I admit: you're right. Pokemon is TOO addictive.

Hi, I'm littlecloudflower/windy, and I got an account!

You read the Tiffany Aching series! Yay you! I got to say, Wintersmith is the most awesome book ever! It's amazing how the beginning is parallel to the end, and it is really heartwarming! :D

Welcome to livejournal.

Yes, I've read all four. I laughed for one minute straight upon readin' the not-so-solemn crossing of the River Styx. Christ, those Feegles are TOUGH. What will it take to wipe out a whole tribe of them?
I think Nanny Ogg would like to be more involved in Tiffany's adventures, since she got a lot of chickens out of this one.

Despite his disease, Pratchett still pushes on with his novels. This is one guy who truly believes in Good Writing.

Ooh, I love that scene! Haha, Pratchett can make death so funny! :D (both literal and figurative, that!)

Ah, then you're more up to date than I am! Still haven't read the fourth one...^^;

Yeah, he's a real inspiration! He's not like some writers, who only do it for money. He actually cares a lot about it, and writes even with his disease.
