I, along with a few women, decided to travel to England; basically to see John Barrowman in a Panto, Robin Hood. For those NOT from the UK, a Panto is generally ,and dare I say loosely, based on a fairy tale. Last year a few of us went to see him in Aladdin, and when we heard he was doing another one this year, we immediately booked tickets, this time on rows 1,2, and 4. Needless to say, closer is better; and three times better than one. The third time we saw it (in the evening) ALL performers were in rare form, as was the audience. Panto's LOVE audience participation and react to it (and to each other). This year they had a ventriloquist who was utterly fabulous in his own right, but played off John (and John off him) so very well. Unfortunately, John has been very sick with a respiratory infection so he has decided to not come out the stage door and sign autographs. To say we were disappointed is inadequate.
That is until Saturday. Read more...
We were in Cardiff to see the sights and had walked from our resting place to Cardiff Bay. And who should be in front of our eyes?? Having coffee and reading the paper (and being accosted by a very young fan) none other than Russell T. Davies. For those not in the know-he is the man who began Dr. Who once again and the spin-off of Torchwood.
We all followed Janet, she is THE fan, and were just going to say hello and tell him we loved his writing, when someone asked if we could snap a picture. I think it was Janet, as I had already snapped a few from way back and she is much more polite than I. The young girl had her dad take a picture of her with RTD and he also snapped one of the four of us with him and then someone was brave enough to ask if would allow individual pictures too. I was the last-he had to ask me......
Then as we were going to leave, he asked us to sit down "since we had come so far..." and would we like coffee or tea. So we spent at least a half hour in conversation with Russell. He engaged each of us in conversation, asked our names (I found out that there will be a Lois in the new season), how we had all met (and we told him QAF) and then we just talked. He is quite a good face reader. I must have looked like I swallowed a lemon a couple of times (once was when he mentioned Hal Sparks and once when he mentioned Ron and Dan and whether they would be invited to the next QAF get-togetherthat would be NO as we did not like the way they ended season 5).
He was taller than I expected, and gracious to a fault. We stayed just a minute too long though, as we left and he got up to go home, another group of people spotted him. But I'll never forget it. And I just about forgot about not meeting John......
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables (we also saw Les Mis) and that seemed appropriate after meeting RTD
