Hopefully Trevor will kick his minor bug. At least he was able to go out. Their costumes are adorable!

As for testing - you don't HAVE to put him into a gifted program even if he passes the test. You could talk to the gifted teacher to see what sorts of things they do and whether Trevor is emotionally ready for it. But you also could try the program for a year, and let him opt out after that if it really isn't working for him in other ways.

When does soccer season end? Could you just flatly refuse to re-enroll him after that, and tell him it's time to pick something new? (Btw, Two is also not really keen on sports, which, likewise, sets him apart from other boys. He likes shooting baskets, but just for fun - he's never played on a team at all. Boy's gymnastics is different enough and he's enjoying that for now, but it's still not what the majority of boys do, you know? So, you can tell Toby he's not alone. Two's current best friend is a tomboy-ish girl. It seems the best compromise for him for now.)

Finding something to stimulate/challenge a super-smart kid is always trial and error. Good luck.

As a gifted kid who was always under stimulated I think your doing the right thing. That laziness can become a habit that's hard to break. Also in my experience the emotional maturity thing may not be as big a deal in a gifted program as you might think. In fact in my own personal experience sometimes gifted kids will play the fool simply to stand out less. Trevor might find it easier to relate and grow with kids who aren't going to call him the geek.

They are so BIG. But still adorable.

Maybe Trevor could go to a special math program/class for kids his age who love math. We have plenty of those programs in my city but they are expensive. The kids who love math love the one afternoon to be with other kids who do.

Maybe he'll like gaming or something else with numbers. Music? I feel he is specially talented in some way and I'm sure you'll find a way to bring it out.

Like Lisa and her saxophone. You'll find something.

Happy Belated Halloween!

Peter Pan and the Ghostbuster are awesome, as is that comic!

Poor Trevor. I hope it works out with the soccer and also with the gifted testing, because it sounds like he definitely needs more stimulation when it comes to math. But it also sounds like school districts haven't gotten any less stupid and rigid about the way they define gifted and talented kids in the many, many many years since I graduated.

And going back to the soccer, it sounds like you guys are doing all the right things in terms of opening him up to opportunities to do other sports and/or activities that he'll be better at and even more importantly, ENJOY MORE. It's just a question of keeping on throwing those opportunities his way and waiting for something to spark his interest.
