Wow, a few minutes to sit down and still be awake enough to think. Probably because Trevor is sick. :P Not very- he's got a headache, sore throat, and low-grade fever, and I'm 90% sure it's just a virus. I hope so, anyway. If it was something an antibiotic would take care of, he would have spiked a higher fever by now. And now we're sitting ( Read more... )

I know, right? I mean, I suspected it was the case. So many works can be boiled down to similar premises- they just aren't as striking as the premise in BR/HG, because kids killing kids is such a taboo. But they really are not the same at all.

I haven't gotten super-attached to too many of the characters in BR because I know they're all going to die, but I do like Shinjin and Shuya a lot. I would like Shuya more if everybody wasn't in love with him (he does fit a lot of the superficial Mary Sue characteristics), but when he's inside his own head and oblivious to all the girls' feelings, I like him a lot better. I definitely love him for his loyalty to his best friend. And Shinjin kind of screams tragic hero there :) But I really liked his impatience with Yutaka, something that I feel is missing from Shuya and gave him a bit more realism. I mean, they're in this horrible, horrible situation, not sleeping, and utterly stressed out- I would expect people to be snapping at their best friends. But I also really like how he sees value in Yutaka that goes beyond amazing skills and whatever, that Yutaka is a truly good person.

Sadly, this is one novel where I don't feel bad saying most of the female characters are fairly undeveloped. I keep waiting for Noriko to do something interesting, but it hasn't really happened yet. And I also haven't gotten to the bit about the poison with the girls. What about you? (I'm not really spoiler-shy- like I said, I already read the end.)

Noriko is such a tragic waste of a character-who-lives that I can't even. (CHIGUSA I LOVE YOU COME BAAAAAAAAACK.) It's not that I think only badass characters are worth attention, but we just didn't KNOW anything about her for ages. By the time we do ... I don't know. Maybe I should reread and focus on trying to have feelings about her, but she's just so underdeveloped. I feel like they kind of give her a Crowning Moment of Badass and expect that to make up for everything else, in a reverse of the thing a lot of movies do where the female love interest is sassy/badass in the opening and then spends the rest of the time damseling. (I suspect that a well-written fic that actually gives her a character would change my mind, but as is? Ehhhh.)

I am HILARIOUSLY BORED with Shuya. I feel really bad, but I find him even more boring than Noriko. Whoops. I mean, yay for loyalty, and I feel like I should like him more, but ...... ehn? I pretty much read the book like >( because I knew he and Noriko were going to make it out and I was like OH COME ON.

My first favourite character was Nobu, and THEN HE DIED. I was like aw c'mon seriously?! I loved that he was the clown and took nothing seriously until it mattered and then he was the one who stood up and wouldn't take it. And, well. :(

I do love Shinji and am super duper sad for how it ends with him. I love that he's real, like you said, and that he's kind of callous and he's not that kind to women (according to Yutaka anyway) but man he steps up when it's on the line.

(I'm sad that the only canon-queer character was a dick, can I just say. I've read a really good Yutaka-centric fic that had him in love with Shinji though, if you're ever curious.)

I love Chigusa Takako a lot. I like that she was shy and she made herself not be, I love that she has close friends and fails at romance feelings and that she fights to the end. I'm less thrilled with her final words (can we have a female character who's not all about a boy please), but y'know, she's like 15 so fair enough.

Mitsuko .... makes me very sad, and I like her in a horrible sort of way. Her life sucked and she had no power and when she got the chance, she took it! It's the sort of morbid fascination that makes me interested in the violent Victors, the ones who didn't win by accident or because everyone else died first or because they had their backs to the wall and had no choice. I can't help admiring her a little even though she's completely bug-nuts crazy. Kiriyama bores me but Mitsuko, much more fascinating.

My favourite though is definitely Kawada. He gives me all my Quarter Quell feelings, he went through it all and now he's back again but somehow he retains his humanity. He's blunt and can't deal with the babies and their useless moralizing and he has trauma and guilt and he's trying to atone and a;dlskfja;sdlkfadlskj ahhhhhh. <33333
