Planning on another real-life post, but this post I wanted to ask a few questions about an exchange fic I just got assigned. It's Hunger Games- the rest is ( under a cut. )

First-person POV you can probably get away with in THG, simply because that's how the canon works. As for shipfic for eleven-year-olds ... well, be it on your own head! Especially if the getout clause mimics canon.

If you're making Katniss too old, I'd be inclined to bump up the ages of Prim and Rue correspondingly (14? 15?). That would have the side effect of making it easier to suppose that the Capitol citizens would like to buy into a romance, since if Snow draws out the same card for the Quell (deliberately or not) a whole bunch of their favourites have recently been killed off?

Well, I'm going for attraction and maybe a first kiss in terms of shipping, but definitely heavier on the friendship side of thing. That's one of the reasons I just want to be in one girl's head- it makes it a little easier because I can believe that maybe one's hit the point where she's getting crushes and the other hasn't necessarily. But through the first games, no real romance. In fact, I can't even see kissing in the first games because I can't believe they'd think much more than "stay alive!"

I want to keep them 11 because it's going to shift some dynamics a little. Peeta is still in love with Katniss, and he's still going to reveal that. I think Peeta's always been pretty aware of what he's doing, and there's going to be a little alluded to side plot of him and Thresh making a pact to protect the girls to an extent, but Peeta is also really trying to draw attention to how young these girls are. He knows that the government doesn't care, but he wants the people to understand that they're really watching 11 year old girls ( ... )

Right, that works better then. I hadn't thought about Peeta in this, but that role for him does fit well.

OK, my first response to your post was "don't kill Peeta!!", and now after reading this, I feel it 100x more strongly.

Just say No! to killing Peeta!!

Eep. Sorry. :) You might not want to read this one then.... (I'd love to keep him alive, but even getting both Prim and Rue out is pushing it. I don't think I can get Peeta out, too.)

Haha, of course not, it's an AU where he has to die. But ohhh, just the thought pains me! Can't imagine writing it.

I know! I love Peeta.

It's very odd, because I think this story might even veer into Katniss/Gale territory. (I might age up Gale a little, but maybe not, since I think he was 18 in the book anyway?) I've never had any objections to Katniss/Gale in theory, but I've never been unhappy with how the book went, either. But I've always seen Katniss's decision not so much as Gale vs. Peeta, but a life of fighting and revolution vs. finding some peace for herself. With the Games behind her, the latter made sense. But never having gone into the Games, fighting and revolution make more sense for her. (Although I can't see that being a big deal, because it's really always been Katniss/family and Katniss/staying alive.) But Peeta.....
