FIC: Raptor Rides

Jul 18, 2009 00:50

I posted Part 11 of A Lot to Live Up To today, but somewhere along the line, the idea of this fic came to me and wouldn't let go. Not crossposted yet, but I probably will tomorrow. Enjoy! :)

Title: Raptor Rides
Author: lls_mutant
Summary: Everyone in the Fleet seems to get the joy of babysitting Hera Agathon. Why not Tom Zarek?

Awww! Sounds exhausting but fun! Little Hera getting hardened Tom to soften up.

"Why didn't you meet the right woman?"
Does your three-year-old ask such grown-up questions? If so, then Toby was definitely the right name for him. :-)

I liked that Tom was thinking about a children's program at the end. Hera should have talked to more adults! :-)

Thanks!!! :) Once this idea got in my head, it just would not leave me alone!

Yes, but not always for the reason you think. Sometimes kids just ask "why?" and repeat the sentence. Like, this is a typical dialogue in our house?

Toby: Mommy, what's that?
Me: A green bean.
Toby: Why is it a green bean?
Me: I have no frakking clue.

(He also made up a new word- fraksolutely :) ) But that's kind of what Hera's meant to be doing here- just asking why without really understanding what she's asking. (But I have gotten "why are you and daddy married?" and "why is Grandpa not your daddy?" before.)

Thanks so much! :)

Awww, that was cute.

"I raised the voices of the people. I challenged the government and the status quo. I was a revolutionary, and I served those who had no voice, and called for their protection."

Hera blinked. "But what did you do?" she asked.

"I blew up a building.

That one made me laugh most, I think.

But dang, are children really that annoying? :)

Thanks so much! This idea just would not leave me alone once it got in :)

And yes. Hera was entirely based on Toby, and this was the kind of day I had today :)

Aw! I think my favorite bit was Hera wanting to be President, and Tom's response, followed by Tom swearing Hera into the Vice Vice Presidency on a zombie novel. It always gets me when a Fleet kid mentions something like not having any idea what spaghetti is--it would be so hard to be a child in the Fleet. I like how much seeing life in the Fleet through a child's eyes changed Tom's perspective, to the point of him being willing to thell Laura he was *wrong*, even.

Thanks so much! This was one of those bunnies that just would not leave me alone once I thought of it. Especially once I got the hook that it would actually change Tom's mind- not about having kids so much as what should be done about the children in the Fleet, and how life could be a bit better for them. After all, they're a people without a voice, without power. How could Tom resist helping them??? :)

AW!!!!! THIS WAS SO CUTE.

Um... okay now that the flail is out of the way...

"Well, frak."

Language Tom! You have innocent ears right there!

"I raised the voices of the people. I challenged the government and the status quo. I was a revolutionary, and I served those who had no voice, and called for their protection."

Hera blinked. "But what did you do?" she asked.

"I blew up a building."

"Oh. That's not good."

From the mouths of babes... I love that this was actually kind of a growing experience for Zarek. I love that he swears her in as Vice Vice President of Children's Affairs and Raptors... that was kind of the cutest thing to ever cute. And the whole thing about her never having anything but algae, no grilled cheese etc... that was intense.

I like this talkative Hera... she actually seems vaguely well adjusted. Might just be my crazy psych major self that has her pegged as selectively mute, shy, um... traumatized.

Thanks! :)

Toby says "frak" all the time. Of course, that's because I use it around him instead of "fuck"... (He invented a new word- "fraksolutely.")

I love that this was actually kind of a growing experience for Zarek.

That was actually what made me write this. I'm really starting to think more about what life was like for other people in the Fleet, especially as I was writing the Dr. Robert stuff for A Lot to Live Up To. If I was actually going to write a remix of my own stuff, I think I'd take I'm No Superman and write it from Alex and Andrew's POV, because they were nobodies and teenagers that were orphaned by the attacks.

Might just be my crazy psych major self that has her pegged as selectively mute, shy, um... traumatized.Heh. This is probably more accurate, but I figured with just Tom she'd open up pretty quickly, which is part of why no one else ever appears in the story (I thought about taking her to a Quorum meeting.) But I figure this is after she starts seeing the shrink (that's the appointment Helo's talking ( ... )
