Loc on Captain Flashback 73 (Andrew Hooper, ed.)

Dear Andrew:

The Captains keep coming fast and furious, and I am barely keeping up, but here are comments on issue 73, and I am working on my third loc of the evening. Well, I have to get it done somehow…

It sounds like TurboCon was a fine time, and I have seen elsewhere mentions of a TurboCon II. Most of us are social people, and I think we all need more conventions like this to see friends.

My loc…we have already had visiting Americans spending like tycoons because their US$ goes so much further in comparison to ours. Other fans who were born in Canada, but who are now living in the States, may be planning their return to Canada. I expect there will be many more financial and political refugees up here, just like when Trump started his first term. It is estimated that Trump’s tariffs may do away with half a million jobs in Canada, and may kill off most small- and medium-sized businesses. I am not sure what we’ve done, but all of this bluster may be prelude to a much tougher negotiation of the US-Canada-Mexico trade deal, which Trump trashed with announcement of the tariffs. He doesn’t seem to believe in allies, and he wants all US car manufacturers to close down all operations in Canada, and have all production at home.

We hope that in reality he will be easy on all Americans and Canadians. Just for the record, Mr. Trump, we are NOT. FOR. SALE. We have our own descent, our own history, and our own pride in our country. And if some blowhard president is going to try to take all of that away, all I can say is, be ready for more assassination attempts, for they will happen. Greenland, Panama Canal? Did someone spike his Diet Coke?

I am but one of millions of angry Canadians who feel like they are in America’s crosshairs. It’s been a difficult time for us. I hope you’ll understand. I look forward to the next issue.

Yours, Lloyd Penney.
