SPN: AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL

Road So Far made me remember why I got into this show. LOL. This season's been pretty snazzy, but... I've liked the non-mytharc eps and moments that have pushed development better than myth arc eps (...actually, any scenes with the angels). Or maybe it's just the angels. Or maybe it's just Castiel, who's bugging me more and more when I rewatch eps on the bus.

Re: High School
Um, my grade school was like this. Not my high school, thank God, but my friend who went to a public high school gave me her share of horror stories that the opening reminded me of.

When they tried to test my IQ, they showed me this picture of three oranges and a pear. They asked me which one is different and does not belong, they taught me different was wrong. [Ani Difranco]

My parents keep asking how school was. It's like saying. "how was that drive-by shooting?" You don't care how it was, you're lucky to get out alive. [My So Called Life]

Principal Snyder: I know Principal Flutie would have said, "Kids need understanding. Kids are human beings." That's the kind of wooly-headed liberal thinking that leads to being eaten. [Buffy the Vampire Slayer]

Also, only on SPN could they make me fear a death by swirly. I don't know how they got the in toilet POV camera action but that was just disturbing and awesome.

Re: Sam and Dean
You'd break your neck to keep your chin up. [Copeland]

Really, they will one day. D:

Throughout this whole scene I was trying to figure out how this guy is supposed to be the anti-christ. It just makes me giggle every time I think about it.

Sam denies there's any special connection to him wanting to check out the school. But. DEAN WINCHESTER IS ONTO YOU. And he does it looking pretty.

ALJSDF;ASDFSDF SAMMY DOESN'T EVEN REACH DEAN'S SHOULDER AHAHAHAHAHA.

"Lunch. Books. Butterfly knife...." Dean wants Sam to ALWAYS be prepared.
"Yeah Dean."  SAMMY ALL EMO BECAUSE HE'S 14 AND THAT AGE IS SO FUCKING MESSED UP AND CONFUSING AND AWKWARD AND NOT COOL.
And Dean, just the way he says 'Sammy' to say so much more and get Sam to fess up why he's so down even though he probably already knows the answer. But he does anyway because he cares because he's the best big brother ever and LSJDFLDSF ILU DEAN
Rofl, I love how Sammy scoffs when Dean is all 'anyone gives you trouble you let me know' because um. Yeah. Those people were probably sent to the nurse's office or even the hospital, and Sam is all 'I AM TALKING ABOUT MY BEING SOCIALLY AWKWARD NOT JUST BEING THE NEW KID' but that's how different they are.

Then Sam takes his emo self into high school and Dean ruffles his head and then watches him and YOU LOVE SAMMY SO MUCH AND JUST WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY BECAUSE HE'S LIKE YOUR KID BUT ALSO YOUR BFF AND BROTHER AND LSDJFS;LF And then Dean just takes a deep breath and goes in, because high school IS sorta like a job: stake out, weird smells, and bad food.

I THINK I AM IN LOVE WITH COLIN FORD. I'M SUCH A PEDO.

God how different they are. Dean without anything, Sam with all his books and clumsy with his weapons of torture.

Bully: "You wanna take his place? Midget?"
Sam: "Yeah. Sure."

*I CAN KILL YOU WITH MY BRAIIIIIIN*
Yeah you better be scared you jerk butt.

Sammy's first man crush. I'm calling it now.

This is never not funny. And Jensen and the kids have so much fun doing this scene. Especially Jensen and the kid playing Colby.

Oh Sammy's here! I no longer care about humiliating you. Bye.

Dean: "The whistle makes me their God."

Well, just so we're clear you wouldn't be one to abuse your power privileges, Deano.

Sam's "god you are unbelievable but I am hopelessly in platonic-love with you more than anything in the world and I would KILL FOR YOU DIE FOR YOU always you adorable goof" look. Yeah.

Jock: "I'm going to shove my FIST down your THROAT."
The fist is his penis.

Dean: "Oh, and three of the cheerleaders are legal. Guess which ones?" :D
Sam: :| "No."
Dean: :C
He just wanted to share, Sammy Spoil Sport. Jeez.

Sam: "You like animals?"
Barry: "...they're a lot nicer than people."

I hear ya, Barry. That's why my cat was my best friend in grade school and the first half-year of high school.

Amanda aka token privileged civilian: "Don't you miss your dad?"
DEEEANNNN.

A;SDKFJSD My little heart MELTED when Dean just got done making out with a hot chick and he still takes the time to pick Sam out in the hallway and say hi. It was so cute, the way he did it too. My LS and I pretended the other didn't exist in high school. And Sammy's dead pan to Barry gushing over how cool Dean is: "yeah, he thinks so. :|" ROFL, Sammy, you keep Dean's head from swelling too large. But we know from canon when you're alone and no one can see you grin that you're Dean's biggest fanboy.

ONE DAY I WILL RULE HELL.

WEEEE LITTLE SAM, STANDING UP TO THE BULLIES TWICE HIS SIZE. But pshhh, Dean's trained him to take down werewolves so this guy would so be toast if Sam brought it. But really, Sammy is like a mini volcano when he's pissed. Not something I didn't already know, but watching that temper almost reach breaking point was sort of scarier than Dean.

After Sam is all emo having burned Barry's bones, Dean comforts him. "There wasn't anything you could have done," and nyghh, Deaaan. :3

"Kids dead."
"Dean."
ROFL. That was a 'No, don't that's not mature problem solving' begging-Dean tone. You don't need a papa bear, you have older brother bear. I bet Dean just stared at Sam for a minute when he saw Sam's face while Sam fidgeted, then Dean got even more dangerously quiet/angry and paced, THEN said "kid's dead" and Sam figures it's safe now to speak out.
"I'M GONNA RIP HIS LUNGS OUT."  ILU DEAN.  You'll always be my hero.
"It's not a big deal..."
"Not a big deal, Sammy look at yourself." It's just a black eye, but that's enough of an excuse for first degree murder for Dean.
"Just shut up okay?!"
And the wind goes out of Dean's sails. OF COURSE SAMMY, WHATEVER YOU WANT.
SAMMY LOOKS LIKE HE'S GONNA CRY FOR A MINUTE, and then goes "I don't need your help" and at first Dean is all *NOOOOOO BROKEN* but then he's all *OF COURSE B/C I TAUGHT HIM EVERYTHING HE KNOWS <3 <3* like a flipped switch and excitedly tells Sammy how he could have pummeled that brat.

My love for these brothers knows no bounds. Sam is so painfully NOT HELL KING MATERIAL and again I am so pissed off at these fucking angels who know all this but don't care and I just kinda WANT Sam to go evil and Dean to be his right hand to spite them all. And Dean is just a real teenager, who loves his brother so much the depth just fascinates me. Hell, this episode I was reminded again why I love (loved? IDEK anymore) Dean so much. He's a teenager, a senior in high school, the age where you're practically free and no one really cares about school including the teachers because college acceptance letters are coming in and stuff. But aside from that, and that he and Sam are each other's best friend, he's also Sam's big brother, and essentially more of a father than John could ever hope to be, all alone. He takes on so much with barely a 'whatever.'

And he just doesn't understand Sam, can't get inside his head.
But you'd do anything for Sammy, right? :3

Another thing I loved about this scene? How the camera cuts back and they just stay there. I get the impression Sam's thing with Barry was sort of one-sided, and Sam typically preferred his default position with Dean, and Dean wasn't exactly with the other guys playing basketball or anything either. They have each other, the other understands, and it's all they want. They don't even have to be doing anything, just sit and exchange what they're doing because they can let their guard down.

How closely this kid can just DO Jared's Sam expressions, eye avoidance/meeting, voice pitches, gestures and guh. I believe its Sam. I wish I could have seen him and Jared doing things together.

Mr. Wyatt: "Do you want to go into the family business, Sam?"
Sam: "....no one's ever asked me that, before. But... No, more than anything no."

And then the conversation about how there are certain major choices in a person's life, and only they can make them? I both felt warm and got nervous about the double-edged meaning. It IS what pissed John off, that Sam wanted to make decisions in his life that didn't follow John's map, but there's also reference to Sam's destiny: at some point he is going to choose who he will be, and no one else can make that for him. I believe in Sam, I do, but I also know he has zero confidence in himself. Using the powers of the demon blood in him is one thing, but Sam has hardly accepted it as a part of him IMO, he has yet to describe it as anything other than with a tone that he finds it dirty, dangerous, and foreign. I think once he accepts it as a part of him, only then will he really be able to control his powers without going dark side.

Totally not expecting that! D: DUDE. Sam got stabbed in the breast with a PROTRACTOR and kicked in the GROIN.

Dean: "Fucking ghost. I'M GONNA RIP IT'S LUNGS OUT."
Sam: ....? *deja vu*
Dean: "....you now what I mean."

I love seeing Dean get all pissed and growly and violent to people who hurt his family. *___*  I LOVE YOU DEAN.

Even as a midget, Sammy takes care of his boyfriends/girlfriends. It's just so oddly DEAN-like how Sam glares the bully down and doesn't take his eye off of him while Barry pulls himself up and Sammy doesn't even MOVE from the weight. It's all Sam's compassion, and he's totally a person in his own right the way he protects Barry and sees Dirk with distaste, but you know after watching Dean he knows how to intimidate people.

Dean's faces spasms when Dirk's dad said he had the body cremated. And then he goes, "....all of him??" LOL Dean. I just. GUH. I love you so much. But you never know, maybe he DID only cremate half his body and buried the other half. Some people just can't make a decision.

Other awesome Dean lines this episode:
Dean: "So ghosts are getting creative. That's just super."
Dean: "You got beat up by Hello Kitty?"
Dean: "Hello Kitty, Revenge of the Nerds, and Martha Dump Truck. What do they all have in common? We're missing something..."
Dean: "Here ghosty ghosty ghosty, come out come out wherever you are..." *bangs shot gun on roof of bus*

And:

Dean: "He's giving you the full cowgirl!"

but before that hilarity we learned Dirk as actually this broken soul because his mom died of cancer and he was poor and the nickname Sam gave him, 'Dirk the Jerk,' for picking on Barry stuck with him for the rest of his life until he OD'ed on drugs. CAN THE WORLD STOP CRAPPING ON SAM AND DEAN? SAM THIS EPISODE ESPECIALLY. I MEAN DAMN IT ALLLL. Sam's guilt complex just got even bigger. I mean, in a three day period he learns a friend committed suicide, burned his bones in the end for no reason, and the school bully was not one-dimensional. SAMMMM

I feel bad for the bully's mom, but the dad is oblivious (there is just no way the school hadn't contacted the dad for all the fighting when Dirk was picking on kids half his size... horizontally and vertically), should have had Dirk in therapy in at least the school's program, despite three jobs. And no one forced Dirk to pick on Barry or anyone else helpless just because he got picked on.

Sam: "I'm not evil."
A;SLDJFSLDLFSDF HUG. SAM I WILL HUG YOU. He sounds all of seven years old or something idek.

Sam: "I've seen evil and you are not it."
DEAN ARE YOU LISTENING? YOU ARE NOT EVIL FOR ANYTHING YOU'VE DONE IN HELL EITHER. SAMMY LOOOOOVESSS YOU.

"We took it out on each other, and then on everybody else. That's high school."
This was such a Buffy moment.

It's not about who you ARE, it's what you DO.  Dirk WAS a victim, but the things he DID were what counted. I love that this episode is really all about choices. i love the metaphor that shit happens to you whether you deserve it or not, but it's how you react and work from there that shapes who you'll be. Every moment is a decision, a life is a stack of decisions made where you went left instead of right or made your own road. Sam has demon blood, but he's not massacring innocents for the lulz or burning families so they'll know the same pain he did; he's trying to use the tools at his disposal to keep people safe when he has to. Dean went to hell, and he can either be a sociopath, or he can buck up and build himself into an even better man. Dirk could have moved on to be with his mother, but instead he possessed children who had no violent urges to kill, and killed stupid kids. The bully was a good actor though IMO.

I'm glad that while Sam pitied the bully's ghost, that doesn't give him a free pass. YAY CHARACTER CONSISTENCY.

I just loved the bit, the flashes from Wee Sam to Ginormo Sam wiping his hair. I loved this episode because finding that one teacher, and going back to high school and feeling yourself being that young again and that powerful feeling of someone believing in you...it's awesome, and lksdfsdf some of my teachers were like Wyatt. And "you took an interest in me when no one else did" -- there's just no other way to say it other than that.

Mr. Wyatt: Well the most important thing is that you're happy. You are happy, right, Sam?

JUST TEAR OUT MY HEART AND STAMP ON IT BEFORE THE INTRO CREDITS FROM NOW ON WHY DON'T YOU KRIPKE. D: SAMMY. DEANO. I WANT TO HUG YOU AND NEVER LET YOU GO.

Comments from TWoP that pissed me off:

Sam was perfect and Dean was just a loser jackass whose only redeeming quality was being Sam's brother. And am I supposed to agree with Amanda or something? Smug bitch. She makes out with a guy she barely knows in a closet, she deserves what she gets if he makes out with other girls in the closet.

No. Sam was not perfect. He was the confused kid who resented his life instead of trying to see from his dad or older brother's perspective, which he could not because he's a kid. Sam gets that courageous self-righteousness from his brother and father. He gets his independence and specific courage from himself.

Dean was is not just lonely and a jackass, he's a TEENAGER. All teenagers are dramatic, emo, self-absorbed, emotional, and confused. Dean was dramatic with 'I'm a hero!' (although he spoke nothing but the truth *___*), Sam was emo, and the girl was self-absorbed, and Dean was dramatic. I lol'ed the entire scene she bulled the bullshit psychoanalysis, because the only reason she pulled that out of her ass was because Dean was macking on another girl and hell yeah, she wanted to hurt his feelings. Is what she said true? Yeah, but it's true of EVERYONE really, and Dean is so much more than just "a lost little boy."

People were wanking about Dean joking about the cheerleaders. Uh. Dean wanted to poke an old lady with a stick and was eying his brother's girlfriend and already trying to get Sam laid next episode after aforementioned girlfriend was pinned to the ceiling and exploded in flames -- how is his at times inappropriate horn dog moments a SURPRISE to you? Dean isn't a saint, I don't like his behavior sometimes but....w/e.

And his only redeeming quality is NOT that he's Sam's big brother, pfffff. Do these people have tunnel vision with eps and have no concept of the big picture? One of Dean's qualities, other than that he has more courage in his pinky than most people have in their entire body, IS the fierce love he is able to provide -- it just happens to be shown in Sammy. the girl to me was bitter and a little jealous Dean will never treat her like he does his brother: sweet and more than he shows to anyone else. DUH you are not supposed to agree with Amanda because you know better, dumb ass.  She's a civilian, outsider. She's only going to get the scratches of Dean and nothing else, and that's all her Dr. Phil rant really amounts to.

Dean once again doesn't know basic ghost lore and Sam needs to explain it to him. We'd been doing well there for a few episodes but these newbies once again write it that Dean needs Sam to explain stuff to him and needing to tell him what to do.

It wasn't Sam explaining so much as Sam reminding and playing expositionist.

What was he there for except to show in the end that Sam was the hero and Dean was the loser? Good job writers. Really. Nothing like an unoriginal afternoon special to bore the living crap out of me and waste 40 minutes of my life.

I found that it totally centered around Sam. Dean was along for the ride and just to compare how heroic Sam was in the end as opposed to his 'cooler' brother. WTF ever Kripke.

Yeah, it would have been nice, but I didn't see Sam and Dean in this episode. I saw perfect Saint Sammy and Dean the Dick, two characters I didn't know and didn't want to know. Absolutely no subtlety or complexity in the characterization, everything black and white and totally cliched. I’m glad that this one was Dean-lite. I would have preferred that he not be in it at all. The newbie writers are 0 for 2 now. Please Kripke, please find someone else to write for your show, because these guys are awful.

DID YOU WATCH THE SHOW? Sam was not a hero in the end, kids only labeled him as one. In the end, no one is in that situation. Dean is thought a loser, but he's the complete opposite more than anyone will ever know. If you put things in the context of the show this shit is obvious.

And anyway, fuck anyone else's opinion, Dean is a hero to Sam and that's really the opinion Dean gives two craps about.

There was a lot of retconning: so Sam went to college because of this teacher? Except that in the Pilot we're told he went to be "safe," and in Hunted he said he was "running away" when he went to college. Whatever, writers.

....watch the show.

Plus, I'm sorry, since when is college only sought for one reason? When does any huge life decision you make for ONE REASON ONLY? Dumb asses.

And lay off Sam. Yes, he's got a temper, this isn't a news flash either. And wouldn't you if you were messed up in the head as he is? Whatever.
