You stayed outside till the morning light
Oh my my my my
After her impulsive decision to end things with Calliope, Arizona had ran into her mother’s arms and sobbed for most of the night. In between sobs she was able to explain to her mother about Calliope going away to school and about her irrational decision to end things. She was beginning to calm down somewhat, when she remembered the look on Calliope’s face when she told her to forget about them; the hurt and pain she saw on her face caused Arizona to burst into a fresh bout of sobs. Throughout the tears and the strangled retelling of what happened, Ellie held her daughter and whispered words of reassurance and comfort to the girl.
As Arizona began to calm down for good around midnight, Ellie moved to get her daughter a warm glass of milk, something that had helped the younger girl sleep since she was a baby. As Ellie walked into the kitchen, she noticed the familiar truck in her driveway.
As she looked closer, she saw Calliope asleep in the front seat with her head resting against the glass. Ellie sighed softly to herself. Her heart was both heavy and proud. She saw the pain in her daughter’s eyes that night, and from the sight in front of her she knew that same pain wasn’t present in Calliope. However, as hard as she knew it was going to be for the two girls, she couldn’t help but be happy and proud that her daughter had found someone who loved her so intensely and unconditionally that they would sleep in a car for her. Seeing Callie asleep outside her house reassured her that the love she saw between the two girls was indeed, forever.
Quickly and quietly so as not to wake the sleeping girl, Ellie gently crawled through the passenger side of the girl’s truck and draped a blanket across her shoulders. On her way back inside the house she left the porch light on, just in case Callie woke up she knew she was more than welcome inside, just like always.
The next morning Arizona was woken from her fitful slumber by the sun peeking through the windows. Wincing from the light and her memories of the night before, she made her way to the window to close the blinds. What she saw out her window made tears well in her eyes and her heart soar. There was Calliope, still outside her house, asleep in her truck.
Arizona knew she had been irrational and had made a mistake, she just hoped Calliope would forgive her. Making her way out to the truck with a cup of coffee in her hand, as a start to an apology, Arizona quietly opened the passenger door and climbed in. She wasn’t quiet enough though, because the sound of the door opening was enough to wake Callie.
Both girls sat staring at one another for moment. Both of their eyes were red and puffy from crying and neither looked as if they had slept at all. From the look of sadness and regret on her face, Callie knew Arizona hadn’t meant what she had said. No words or apologies were needed as Callie took Arizona in her arms. Both girls let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding and relaxed into the other’s embrace. They knew they would have to talk about school and how they would make their relationship work, but right then all they wanted was to just be together.
1 Year Later
Callie had gone to UCLA like she planned and through massive amounts of video chats, text messages, and frequent weekend trips across country courtesy of her father, her and Arizona were able to make the long distance work. Though it was hard at times, they found that the distance just made those moments they were together that much sweeter and their relationship that much stronger.
Callie had just finished her first year at UCLA and was back in Miami for the summer. Since Arizona still had a week left before the semester was over and was in the midst of finals, they girls had not seen much of each other since Callie had been back. So today, Callie was going to surprise Arizona by taking her out for lunch.
As Callie was walking through the halls of her former high school looking for her girlfriend, she found herself missing the place a little bit; her last year of high school had been the best year of her life, largely in part because of the girl she was currently looking for. When Callie found Arizona, she was leaving the counselor’s office. Quietly walking up behind her, Callie placed her hands over her girlfriend’s eyes, “Guess who?”
Before Callie could even blink, Arizona had spun around and thrown her arms around her girlfriend’s neck. “Baby! What are you doing here? I thought I wasn’t going to get to see you until tonight?”
Arizona’s perkiness never failed to amaze Callie. Giving her girlfriend a quick peck she explained, “I know, but I missed you. So I thought I would surprise you, and take you to lunch.”
Arizona grinned widely, showing off her dimples. Knowing she had a surprise of her own, her excitement was on overload, “Super! Let’s go!” Callie just chuckled letting herself be dragged out of the school and into the parking lot.
Once they were seated at a local diner and waiting on their meal, Arizona couldn’t keep her surprise for Calliope to herself any longer.
“So, you’re not gonna need to come back home next year for my graduation,” Arizona began coyly.
Confused, Callie questioned her girlfriend’s statement teasingly, “What? Why not, you didn’t fail did you?”
Seeing the smirk on her girlfriend’s face, Arizona maturely stuck her tongue out at her before continuing, “No ya goof, I didn’t fail. In fact, I did the opposite. I graduated early. That’s why I was in the counselor’s office today. We were finalizing my transcript and making sure I was eligible to walk next week at the graduation ceremony.”
Seeing the shocked expression on Callie’s face, she went on, “I couldn’t stand being so far away from you. Don’t get me wrong, I love talking on the phone to you and all, but talking to you in person is so much better. So since I was already ahead in most of my classes, I talked to my counselor and I’m going to take the last class I need to graduate over the summer. But since I’m awesome, they’re gonna go ahead and let me walk next week!”
Though Callie was excited over the prospect of having Arizona with her in California that fall, she was still a little hesitant. “What about your parents? Are they okay with you graduating early? And what about prom and all of those other senior experiences?” Callie’s senior year was one of the best years of her life, granted a lot of that had to do with Arizona, but she wanted to make sure the other girl wouldn’t regret her decision.
“My parent’s are okay with the idea. Yes, they were a little hesitant at first, but we talked about it and they realize it’s my life and that it’s what I want. Plus, they know I’ll have you if I ever get freaked out or overwhelmed. And as for prom, I already had an amazing prom experience, last year with you. So I don’t need to go through all of that again. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, all I need is you,” Arizona calmly and confidently told her girlfriend.
Seeing the excitement and calmness in her girlfriend’s eyes, Callie couldn’t help but get excited herself at the realization that in a few short months the two of them would be together in the same city once again.
