Who is a Jew - Kryptonian version

Dec 19, 2005 10:08

So sethg suggests that Kal El of Krypton doesn't need a conversion brit, because he is already Jewish.
Leaving aside the whole Siegel/Schuster immigrant thing, what evidence do we have to support or refute the idea that Kryptonians were Jewish?
CON

  1. How would they get there?
  2. Lara (and most other Kryptoian women we see) never dressed tzniut
  3. Ruled by chas v'shalom Science Council
  4. If Jor-El and Lara were Charedi, they would have had 8 children to send to Earth. Even as MO 3 kids are more likely than one.
  5. Just look at Supergirl's costume! (or rather, don't).
  6. The men are all bareheaded.

The pro side requires an essay rather than a list.

There are several reasonable ways Jews could have reached Krypton.
Most likely, this happened in Egypt - everyone knows that Egyptian
magic reached heights today's scientists could only dimly imagine.
Possible candidates include the 4/5th of Jews Rashi says vanished during
the plague of darkness. Perhaps instead of dying, they stole several
hyperspace capable Egyptian Pyramids (see Stargate SG-1 for details) and made their way to Krypton. Similarly, the midrash recounts that an early attempt at Exodus was made by the tribe of Ephraim(?) - when they did not return the surviving Jews can be excused for believing they had died in the desert.

Next, consider the fact that secular Jews were responsible for revealing what we know of Kryptonian society.
Krypton was ruled by the best and wisest minds available - great in depth, scope and reach. For a secular Jew in the 1930s, this would be understood as chas V'shalom a group of scientists. However, consider the fact that this council was resistant to new facts presented by a younger mind. With this additional clue, we understand that rather than the Science Council, Krypton was undoubtedly ruled by the Moetzet Gedolei Hatorah (Council of Torah Sages). When Slifkin Jor-El presented his thesis to them, it was rejected as not being in accord with the Kryptonian mesorah.

Further clues are available. Note that while Kara (supergirl)'s costume is untzniut, in civilian life she is careful to wear a sheitel, even though she isn't married. This obviously places her among the [insert Jewish group of choice]. Every Kryptonian name we know of (Jor-El, Kal-El, Lara, Kara Zor-El, Zod) is pronouncable in Hebrew.

Anyone else care to weigh in pro or con?
