Sorority Life

for those of you who are skeptical about sororities or those incoming freshman who think sororities are all girlie and about parties lsiten up...
OF COURSE there are parties, and yes sororities are usually the ones that know the most and get invited to the most...but these parties are not greek-exclusive. for every one sorority/frat person they bring 2 or 3 non-affiliated friends. so those affiliated (in a frat or sorority) are not the only ones partying. okay now on to my defense of sorority life.

today was philanthropy day where all the sororities put up displays in the quad about what their philanthropy is and it's judged. along with explaining gerontology and the maine sea coast mission, we sigma kappas were able to socialize amongst ourselves and other greek org.'s. lately i have been sad about a wide variety of things and feeling overwhelmed. while i sat at the letters and hun gout with my sisters i felt comfortable for the first time in weeks. in a sorority there are cliques, i won't deny it... but there's a certain general bonding experience that comes from a common goal. focusing on greek week has given me an outlet of which to focus my energy, and all of sisters help me feel good about myself. greek pyramid practice has brought many of us close and we are able to help each other feel better without knowing the conditions or even saying a word. that's one thing that makes a sorority a better outlet than sports or studies.

walking on campus is also an amazing feeling. there is nowhere i can walk without running into a greek who knows me. it feels so great when you're feeling sad and just plodding along the quad to hear someone from across the green yell "JACKIE!!!!!!!" with this incredible enthuisiasm. the respect amongst greeks goes a long way and can really be a strength when you feel isolated.

bottom line... if you thought frats and sororities were for dumb blondes and party people... GROW UP. and for those who may have been cautious of going greek ... RUSH! it doesn't hurt to give the sororities/fraternities a try.. if you don't mesh with them, then don't get pinned, but if you find yourself liking a certain greek org... go for it. it was the best choice i have ever made, and this is soemthign that will benefit for the rest of my life.

GO GREEK!
