Hey peoples!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I realise now I haven't posted about Yuletide, and now that the authors have been revealed I can do a double whammy! First, the story I got, which I wish I had remembered to enthuse about before but it is seriously amazing. It's called There goes another one, and is Thor and Loki as fratboys! :D! I was useless and didn't put a Dear Author post up, which makes it even cooler that the author (withoutmaps) wrote something that made me so happy. It's the neatest modern spin on a Norse myth I've read in a long while, and the sheer aptness of it makes it even better. Plus, it involves Thor! So, go read!

And now, the fic I wrote! In Translation, for botherd, which was a post-series Mattew/Mary Downton Abbey fic. I actually wrote the whole thing in about a day, but spent weeks planning it in my head, puzzling out how to write it. I'm going to blather about it for a bit because blah blah process. I knew I didn't want to set it pre-series, and that war had been declared at the end of the series, 1914. That couldn't possibly be ignored, it was the stonking great elephant in the room if I didn't include it. Also, something I loved the most about the series was how news travelled. The telephone was only installed in Downton in 1914, but news got to the house in a variety of ways through the series, first via newspaper, then telegram, then letter, word of mouth, conversation...the sense of the house being increasingly connected to the world outside of it was one I really loved. I wanted to tell this story in fragments, through letters, newspapers, conversations and telegrams, to set the scene over a number of days, and via a number of people. Multiple perspectives, and multiple reactions. The main action of the story is very contained; the plot has a very small timeframe. It was a joy to write and puzzle out. I'm very happy with it.
