“And then Phoenix was a hobo.”
She folded her hands with an air of finality and a tinge of sadness in her voice.
There was silence in the room. Then a chorus of protests broke out from the huddle of children in front of her who were sitting cross-legged on their story blanket.
“But miss, there must be a happy ending! Doesn’t he get to go back to court and catch some more bad guys!?” piped up Lance Milnes, in a protesting sort of voice.
“Stories always have happy endings!” agreed Margery Ribble, nodding sagely, as if it were the law.
But their teacher shook her head, sadly. “Not all stories have a happy ending, children. Not even ones in books. And that one was about real people, and I’m afraid that real people don’t always get to live happily ever after.”
There was silence again as the class digested this piece of information.
The sound of the school bell broke the spell, and the children started scrambling to their feet, attention diverted to thoughts of their parents, home and dinner.
As they all tumbled out of the classroom in a jumble of arms, legs and satchels, their teacher started to gather up books and toys, putting them tidily away for the next day. She was engrossed in that work when she heard a hurriedly muffled sniff from behind her.
She turned to see Corey Brown standing there, looking downcast, with the hint of a tear in his eye.
“Are you alright, Corey? Did the story make you sad?”
He nodded. “If that was about real people, Miss, does that mean… I mean, is Mr Edgeworth really dead? For real? Like my granddad, I mean.”
She hesitated for a moment before answering. “I’m afraid so, Corey.”
“Oh.” The boy hung his head. There was a pause. “I didn’t want him to be dead. He sounded really cool.”
“He was cool, Corey. They both were. We were all very sad for a very long time.”
Corey nodded. “I was sad for a long time when granddad died too. I wanted to run away, just like Phoenix.” With a thin sigh he turned and left the classroom thoughtfully.
Pearl Fey watched him go, then turned back to collecting up the books, blinking to keep back the tears that were welling in her own eyes as memories of a happier time danced through her mind.
