Bus Stories: Geno

Jun 06, 2012 15:05

I do not catch Geno's bus very often. That route is mostly my fail-safe when other buses aren't running on time.

(The closest stop on Geno's route is three blocks up the hill from me. The other bus route has a stop less than a block from me.)

I did not learn his name until recently, but he was one of the drivers mentioned by the two chatting girls who were big Kelly fans. Or at least I'm pretty sure he was the one they were talking about: old guy, has a little radio that's always playing old music.

I've had three encounters with him. The first time was the ride that had the passenger who wouldn't stop taptaptaptapping against the side of the bus.

The second time, I rode all the way from the mall to my stop. When I pulled the signal cord, he looked up and said, "What? Are you leaving us already?"

"Yes," I said, and because he was being chatty, I decided to leave by the front door. As he was pulling over, I said, "I first get on the bus in Avon before 5 o'clock, so I'm so ready to get off the bus now. Sorry."

"Oh, that's too bad. You look like such a fun girl!"

I laughed and got off the bus.

When I told my boss about it, she said, "Fun?! Have you been holding out on us? I thought I knew you! You're quiet. You hardly say a word, and don't you spend all your time on the bus with your earphones on? Are you being outgoing on the side?"

"Nope. I had my earphones on for the whole trip. I have no idea why he said that. But I am fun!"

That was maybe a month ago, maybe longer.

On Monday, it was raining and ALOPD had been slow, so I missed my connection and I really didn't want to walk the 20 minutes in the rain. The usual old couple (who are a FONT OF BUS WISDOM) told me to take a seat and wait because Geno would be by before too long. (So I learned Kelly and Geno's names from that couple.)

I've never caught that bus at CCSU before. I've only grabbed it at the mall. But I waited.

I got on the bus and Geno says to me, "What are you doing out so late?"

"Um... I missed my other bus."

"Oh, dear, young lady." (Now seriously, most of the other times I've taken this bus, it's been the same time, I've just caught it at the start of the route instead of halfway down it.)

When I get off the bus, Geno says to me, "Now this is the right bus, young lady. This is the bus you should be taking all the time, but you should catch an earlier trip!"

...

It was like... 6:50. And I can't tell if he's taken a shine to me personally or if he's trying to steal people away from Kelly's bus.

(And I've seen him be rather cranky with several younger ladies on the bus, so I don't think it's just because he's friendly with everyone. Maybe he has a thing for nearly 40-something brunettes...)
