So, I didn't hear about it until yesterday, but there was a big bus accident last week Monday. (Bus got hit by a truck. News reports say 27 were hospitalized, maybe 5 were seriously injured.)
http://www.ctnow.com/news/hc-east-haven-bus-crash-0515-20120514%2C0%2C3674449.story I heard about it because the angry-looking old Polish man who is one of my favorite drivers was taking his break and followed me as I got on the next bus, which was being driven by an even older and more angry-looking Polish man. ALOPM1 says to ALOPM2, "Oh, I see you're wearing your seat belt, I hate having to wear the seat belt now. Wear the seat belt in my car? Always. On the bus? No! *grumblegrumble*"
After ALOPM1 went away, ALOPM2 starts ranting about "Idiot! Seat belts are good! What, does he want to die?! *grumblegrumble*"
(My Polish great grandfather died before I was born, but... I have to tell you, there was something about watching their grumbling that made me think "cute" ... though it's an extremely weird kind of not-cute cuteness. But it made me picture my mother as a small girl and how her grandfather must have been like those drivers, and... I don't know. I was amused.)
ALOPM2 then went on to say that the driver from the big accident was still in the hospital. Went on and on about all his broken bones, etc. ... Which is curious, since the news reports say the bus driver wasn't injured.
Then this morning, Nice-but-Evangelizing Driver says to me, "Hey, we have to wear seat belts now, so you tell me if you ever see me without my seat belt on." ... ... um... OK?
...
So, anyhow, CTTransit has now made seat belts mandatory for their drivers. And... I don't even know if the buses had seat belts for the drivers before now.
