And I shall bow my head in mourning for the passing of my black shoes...
Okay, not really. But I am very sad that they died on me, especially since they only needed to hold on a little longer. I've had an odd relationship with these shoes, since I really liked them even though they kept rubbing sores on my feet and forcing me to buy plasters. But those shoes went with me to Italy, Spain, Prague and Vienna, so I have some good memories with them.
They'd been falling apart for a while, but I think it was standing for three hours watching Othello at the Globe with
oreodont that finally killed them. I tried to hold on for a while longer--I could pad out the crumbling heels with toliet roll, and the cracks weren't that bad, but then they started rubbing enormous holes in my socks and, well, I don't have that many socks.
(And no, I don't know why I'm writing so much about my shoes, other than that I need to kill time before I meet Andrea.)
But anyway, I was forced to wander into city centre to try to find new shoes, and I always find this frustrating. Why is it so difficult to find nice black shoes that are comfortable and affordable? I only want three qualities in my shoes: not embarrassing to wear in public, comfortable, and affordable. It seems I can only have one, 1.5 at the best.
Going into city centre is also dangerous because I inevitably end up in Primark. I love Primark, but since it is trendy and I hate today's trends I almost never buy anything. But it's the concept of Primark that I love--shirts for £1.50? Yes please. Dresses for £3? Why are they all ugly and/or transparent? Jeans for £6? If only I didn't need to get them home. And so on.
But visiting Primark also reinforces how much I hate today's styles. Why are the 80s back? Whose bright idea was that? And why do all the clothes eschew the waist? Seriously--I want to know. There's practically no difference between the maternity and normal sections! I hate these stupid long shirts/dresses with horrible unnaturally high waist lines. They all look awful on me, so I can't take advantage of the cheap clothes. And honestly, they don't look flattering on most people.
I am very interested to see the trend in 60s-style jackets. I don't think I'll buy one myself, and I'm not quite sure that I even like them, but it's nice to see something different.
But these stores are perpetrating a great crime against humanity...they are bringing back white plastic framed sunglasses. This is wrong. Horribly horribly wrong. I stood and watched a whole gaggle of teeny-bopper girls trying them on and exclaiming how wonderful they are. Seriously--if girls wear these all summer, I will spontaneously combust from suppressed laughter.
Yes. That killed just the right amount of time.
