September 11, seven years later

Sep 11, 2008 12:11

September 11 ought to be a day to put aside partisan politics, remember what happened in 2001, and appreciate what can be accomplished when Americans have a united purpose that honors our common experience.

Unfortunately, the last seven years have seen a politicization of September 11 to benefit the Republican Party.

I am glad to see that today the presidential candidates met together to commemorate the day. That's a step in the right direction. However, there is a stark contrast in what the candidates said today that emphasizes the national tragedy that has been the post-9/11 politicization of those events.

As mentioned in a comment by user "Alicia" on this Slog post, Obama's speech stressed unity and common interest, and McCain's speech stressed his personal views and the divisions exploited in the wake of September 11. All you have to do is count the pronouns:

Obama:
we: 5
us: 4
they/them: 0
he: 0
she: 0
I: 0

McCain:
we: 2
us: 1
they/them: 4
he: 1
she: 0
I: 6

Policy specifics aside, this summarizes why I'm voting for Obama.

9/11, obama, mccain, politics
