Steve Mussack's Passing

Dear Chaminade Family:

It is with great sadness that we share with you the news that death has again visited our staff, this time taking Steve Mussack '67 to his eternal rest. Steve passed away yesterday afternoon around 5:30 pm. He had hiked to a camp in the San Gabriel Mountains along with Mike Gwaltney and twelve students. Without warning, Steve was struck down by a heart attack and he died instantly.

Steve had a beautiful death -- in the wilderness and in the company of students - two of the great passions of his life.

We can only imagine how traumatizing the event was for Mike Gwaltney and the students who were present. They were remarkable in their response and the Chaminade community is so very proud of them.

Of course, the pain Mike and the students feel is only a reflection of how Steve’s family is feeling and our prayers and compassion are poured out to them.

We realize this shocking news is coming to you on the heels of Gail Nelson’s death a couple of months ago and then the passing of Father Ed. It is indeed a challenging time for our Chaminade family. Now, we comfort each other in the tradition of our own faith-community. At times like this, we turn to our faith in a special way and we find great comfort in knowing that Steve is with God and today he is being welcomed to Paradise by hosts of angels and the loved ones who have gone before him.

To help ease the grief of those left behind, we will have a gathering for prayer tomorrow, Sunday at 5:00 p.m., in and around Steve’s room. Our Chaplain, Father Jim will lead prayers, Kristin Firestone will prepare music, and the counselors will be on hand to assist those who need care. The sharing of your remembrances will be a great gift to us all.

Along with extending our condolence to Steve’s family, we want to reach out in a special way to his students, past and present. To them, he is a man who demystifies math, teaching with love for his students and the subject. He is a true Marianist educator and a Christian gentleman.

Steve Mussack, may God grant you eternal rest.
