Why is it
that I always find some of the older sentai the most interesting? Anyway, as mariko_azrael and nomadskye know, I have recently gotten into watching Hikari Sentai Maskman, and I was able to find episodes subbed in english, so I can actually understand what's going on. This was also the sentai broadcast the year I was born, 1987 (started airing a little under 3 months before my birthday, it started in February, I was born in early May). But anyway, I enjoy the show very much. Initial character impressions:
Takeru: Takeru strikes me as a jerk sometimes, but a very caring person. People sort of gravitate towards him, and all children trust and respect him almost instinctivly (then again, all the Maskman do this, but especially towards Takeru). He cares about his team, but yet he is conflicted, since he is in love with one of the enemies's group, despite the fact they don't like her at all, and imprisoned her in an icy coffin (she's not dead, just in an eternal sleep). But usually, I like Takeru.
Kenta: ah Kenta. He's a guy that looks like he could easily beat you up, but he's really a big teddy bear. Given, the first episode I saw of him was him chasing after various girls and begging and pleading for them to go on a 'date' with him (he of course, was met with rejection). But then he meets one named Miyuki, who likes him, but Tube (the enemy's name as a whole), kidnaps the girl and has a replica of her that Kenta tries to save. At the end, she's free, but Kenta says he doesn't go back and see her because he doesn't want to put her in the lines of danger that goes with having to protect the world.
Side note: I thought about it, and it's very unlikely that this is the same Miyuki that most people know from Magiranger. Partially because Makito is 24 when we meet him, and this Miyuki looked too young to already have kids, and if was the Miyuki we know, she would have already been married, and had 4 kids (Makito: 7, Houka: 5, Urara: 3, Tsubasa: 2 and would've been pregant or just have had Kai). So THERE'S NO CHANCE THAT IT WAS THE SAME MIYUKI! Just a concidence they had the same name.
Akira: Akira is the youngest out of all the Maskman at 16, with Takeru at 24, Kenta at 22 and Haruka & Momoko both 19, but you'd never know he was that young except for his manner of speech sometimes. Akira really has a brave heart, and is willing to sacrifice and get beaten up for his friends. We also learn from him that when he was a little boy, he used to put catarpillars in ladies' shoes. But right now, Akira is my favorite out of the boys. Also, he has 2 swords that he always has on his person (they usually come out of his shirt sleeves, but don't ask me if he keeps them there all the time).
Haruka: Haruka is a quiet girl, at least compared to Momoko, who was raised as a ninja and thus was told by her father to give up all 'girly things (specifically a favorite doll)' when she was a child since he said it interefered with her training. As a ninja, she frequently had ninja stars (or whatever they really are), that come out sometimes and let them escape danger.
Momoko: oh Momoko, I love you. She's not really a typical pink, in that she's very tomboyish and doesn't appear girlish, but she can be sometimes. She has a very bubbly personality and isn't afraid to speak her mind at any times. She just is so cheerful and optomistic that she's my favorite out of her and Haruka. Also, we learn that Momoko used to pluck the whiskers off of cats when she was little (this corresponds to Akira's childhood habit, since they were sharing reasons that they might go to Hell if they die during one of their battles. It was just the two of them, the others were frozen in ice.)
for pairings: I really like Akira/Momoko together right now, and I've seen a little bit of Takeru/Haruka, but that's only from the first few episodes, and then a few various ones out of order.
also, I know I did this in my last post, but if anyone has Episode 23 of Maskman with english subtitles, I would greatly appreciate you putting it up so I could download it, since when I downloaded the eps off of RB, 23 was missing (I'm not sure they realized there were 51 episodes, since there were only 50 links). But again, this would be greatly appreciated.
in other news, I have claimed Jason/Kat and Akira/Momoko over at 1sentence, inspired by how mariko_azrael has already done Kenta/Akira and Katie/Trip. I also think it might be faster for me to these then full fic ones that I have lying around, so I'm looking forward to completeing one of my challenges. So wish me luck! But now I need a Maskman icon...nomadskye? Maybe you could make a Momoko/Akira one for me, please?
I have to be off now, since I have a test in a little over an hour, and I should be studying instead of typing this.
