Authorial Intrusion - April Henry
I love reading about the Publishing Journeys of my favorite writers.
I love the long, soul-searching interviews that reveal every obstacle and triumph: the author whose agent made her do three revisions before signing her … the author who gets up at 4:30 a.m. to write, because it’s the only time she has to herself … the critically acclaimed author who spent nine years trying to get published … I never tire of this stuff!
Long, luxurious interviews aside, don’t you sometimes find yourself wondering: “But do you like Thai or Chinese food better?”
Reader, I asked them.
I assembled a grab-bag full of random questions and emailed them to my favorite writers.
They answered!
This will be a weekly post, as long as I have a supply of bored willing writers.
And by the way, if you’re an author and I haven’t emailed you yet … do not imagine that you’ve escaped my clutches. My curiosity rambles far and wide! I will get to you. April Henry has published five adult mysteries, and a YA thriller Shock Point. I think I’ve read all of her books except one, and my favorite is Learning to Fly, which works well as a YA thriller, too, in my opinion. She’s up to her ears in other WIPs, and I can’t wait to read whatever she publishes next!
Thai food or Chinese?
That's tough. Chinese.
Where did you go on your first date?
To this guy's house to listen to records. He ended up marrying one of the most popular girls in school (he was the most nerdy) and being abusive.
Ocean or lake?
Ocean.
First car?
I was in my 30s. It was a Mazda 323 so cheap it lacked a passenger side view mirror and a clock (although it did have a recess in the dash helpfully labeled "quartz." It was so sad I gave it to a character in my series.
Furthest you’ve ever been from home.
Germany.
Tell us something weird about you.
My thumb bends both ways and looks disgusting. Just my left one. I can scare small children with it.
If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Cerulean.
Rain or sun?
Sun.
Rollercoasters: love ’em or hate ’em?
Queasy.
Any phobias?
Spiders.
Chocolate chip cookies or snickerdoodles?
Do the chocolate chip cookies have nuts or oatmeal, or, ideally, both? If not, snickerdoodles.
