Part 26/27
Bill walked into the staff tower as Harry and Ron were leaving, quickly explaining, “Feeding time.”
Bill found it interesting that through all that they’d faced, the two boys felt uncomfortable with Hermione breast-feeding their son. It wasn’t as though she was baring all to see. She was very discrete, covering her body and little Will under the blanket yet the act itself made Harry and Ron uncomfortable.
Maybe one day when they had a child of their own they’d understand because Bill believed this was the most beautiful and natural bond a mother could share with a child and smiled as he entered their quarters.
Hermione was sitting on the couch with her book laid opened on the armrest and a bundle of blankets against her chest.
“Hi,” he whispered softly, not wishing to disturb the baby.
She smiled back but winced as the baby wiggled under the cover and he knew little Will must be very hungry. It had only been a week since his birth and her breasts were often tender from unfamiliarity of constant suckling. Leaving them alone for a moment, he went to the kitchenette and got her a large glass of ice water. She needed to supplement what she gave to their son.
When she was about to switch sides, she pulled off the blanket to reveal the baby, contently attached to her full breast. Bill joined her on the couch, cradling her as Will settled once again. He looked over her shoulder, her hair brushing against his cheek and watched their son happily feed and thought it was the most beautiful sight in the world.
“I love you,” he whispered against her ear.
Hermione turned to him with a smile, kissing him softly on the lips.
There had been so many tragedies in her life. Her heart still ached for Charlie and her parents but with Bill and William Charles by her side, she hadn’t felt this happy in a long time.

“Are you ready?” Harry asked his two best friends.
“I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.” Hermione lightly slapped Ron’s fidgeting hand and fixed his robe, making certain it hung gracefully. Then the music began to play in the Great Hall and together with rest of the graduates, they proudly walked in for their ceremony.
Families and friends applauded at their entrance yet Hermione could still distinguish her son’s babbling and as she took her place at the podium, commanding everyone’s attention, she had to give him a little wave. In turn, William Charles waved his chubby little arms in the air, being held high by his proud grandfather. As those gathered settled into a quiet murmur, Hermione began her graduation speech.
“Hogwarts is the most wonderful place any witch or wizard could attend, especially for Muggleborns such as myself. In my past seven years, I’ve been awed by the incredible knowledge of the magical world under the skilled guidance of our esteemed professors.”
She gazed at the staff and received a nod of approval from Professor McGonagall and a reassuring smile from Bill.
“Many of us will follow in their footsteps in one way or another, passing on our knowledge to the next generation and we thank you all for giving us the opportunity.”
Then she took a deep breath to control her emotions before she continued.
“As we all know, recent events have affected us greatly. Until then, many of us believed we were invincible but now we know how precious every life is.”
Then Professor Dumbledore joined her with scrolls of certificates.
“There are few of us unable to attend this special occasion. Those of us who have sacrificed their lives so that fellow students could live.”
Then Hermione read the names of six seventh year students who died during the Final Battle. They were represented by their parents’, who accepted the certificate in their child’s name and many of them were fighting back their tears.
Then it was time to make the hardest speech of her life and she could already feel her tears down her cheek.
“One of the lost was a graduate and a flying instructor for his beloved school, Hogwarts and a skilled dragon keeper, a proud son of Arthur and Molly Weasley and a loving brother to his six siblings.”
Her voice began to crack but she went on.
“Charlie Weasley was also a wonderful husband who’d sacrificed so much… that he couldn’t even be here for his son’s birth.” Harry and Ron were by her side, hugging her in support.
“He was one of many who fought bravery. You see those of us who fought along and survived here with me.” She gestured to the entire graduating class.
“All of us, Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs, Slytherins and Gryffindors… we will remember each one who could not be here and make certain their sacrifices were not in vain.”
Suddenly, the entire graduating class stood, applauding for her and soon they were joined by others, professors, parents and fellow students.
Hermione wiped her tears as she walked through the audience to receive her son from Arthur and returned to her place amongst the graduates. Then together with William Charles, Hermione Jane Granger-Weasley received her diploma from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

“When are you going to marry her?” Molly asked her oldest son during Hermione’s birthday celebration.
He gazed over the lawn to where Hermione sat with their son, surrounded by her friends. She had a beautiful smile on her face as she opened her presents.
“I don’t know, mum. It’s only been few months since Charlie died. I’m not sure if she’s ready to get married again.”
“You’re already living together and with William growing, shouldn’t you two make it official?”
“You know as far as anyone else is concerned, Will is Charlie’s son.”
“Yes, but is he?”
“I don’t know and I don’t want to know and neither does Hermione. As far as we’re concerned, he’s our son. Besides I’ll be going back to Hogwarts to teach the DADA class and Hermione had been offered an apprenticeship with Professor McGonagall. As long as three of us are together, it doesn’t matter if it’s sanctioned by the Ministry or not.”
Then he turned to his mother, lightly hugging her.
“I know you mean well but we’re fine as it is for now.”
“All right, dear,” Molly agreed but she was already spinning other ideas in her mind. Granted Hermione and Bill were happy but she knew even Charlie would agree, those two should be married and her goal was to make sure they do before the summer was over.

It was too muggy in the house, causing little Will to fuss and Hermione decided to sit out on the porch for a while until the baby settled. He seemed almost out as he suckled against her breast. He would periodically doze off with his little mouth still attached to her nipple but every gentle tap to his cheek had him resume feeding and she knew he wasn’t done yet even as he never opened his brown eyes.
She loved these quiet moments while she gave her son the nutrients he needed from her own body. The gentle suckling against her breast was like a spiritual connection between them.
She gently ran her hand through his soft hair, curly like hers and red like… Charlie? Or Bill? It didn’t matter to her. William Charles was a Weasley yet would it matter to him? Would he ask who his father was when he got older? Would he think Bill was his only father? She wanted him to know Charlie also. He was a big part of her son just as Bill was. Would William understand? She wasn’t sure.
Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t notice the person joining her on the quiet porch.
“I’m sorry. Am I disturbing you?” Arthur whispered quietly.
She looked down at her son who had fallen asleep, completely this time with his mouth open and breast milk dribbling down his chin. “No. He’s out. I think for few hours.” She began to lift him over her shoulder but when Arthur offered to take him, she gladly handed him over. Fixing her top, she watched the experienced father of seven efficiently laid a small towel over his shoulder, gently bracing the baby over it and with a light tap, got a nice big burp from the small body.
“Mmm… must have been a good dinner. Let’s see, any more?” He tapped again and this time a smaller gas escaped. She could see William’s content smile even as he slept.
Arthur joined her on the bench as he continued to rub his grandson’s back.
“How are you feeling, Hermione?”
“Fine, thank you.”
“Getting enough sleep?”
She had to smile. If anyone knew what it was like to have an infant, it was Arthur. “As much as he lets me.”
“You know we’re all here to help.”
“Thank you.” She felt warmed by his words.
“So what are your plans now that you have graduated? Bill mentioned you’d been offered an apprenticeship with Professor McGonagall?”
“I thought it best for me to accept the position. It would make things easier since Bill will be there plus Professor McGonagall said it would be okay to have William with me most of the time. It’s an ideal offer. Even in the Muggle world, most mothers can’t take their babies to work with them.”
“Is this what you really want? You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your career goals. We both know there have been plenty of sacrifices made.”
“I’ve always had an interest in Transfiguration and I have great respect for Professor McGonagall. Perhaps even if my situation was different, I may still have taken the offer. It’s just that now William’s welfare is always on the top of my list.”
“I understand. Having children changes perspectives. We all want what’s best for William.”
“We do,” Hermione agreed.
His wife had asked him to talk to Hermione about Bill but Arthur didn’t know how to bring up the subject. He adjusted the baby, cradling him in his arms to give him time to come up with something.
“You’ve been through a lot, Hermione and it’s about time you get what you really want out of life and I think that includes Bill.”
“He is in my life.”
“Not as a husband.”
She didn’t know what to say.
“Are you worried about what we may think if you get married again? Because you know we’re happy to see you two together.”
“No, it’s not that. I guess I’d been so busy with William. Plus Bill hadn’t asked.”
“Why does he have to ask? Why can’t you?”
She was taken back by his suggestion.
“Sometimes woman have to take charge in a situation like this.” Then he grinned. “I certainly agree especially when Molly told me to marry her. If she hadn’t, I’d still be twirling my thumbs, waiting for the right opportunity.”
Arthur stood, keeping gentle hold on his grandson.
“Think about it, Hermione. What do you want out of life? Whatever you want, it’s all there within your reach.”

Hermione stayed out on the porch, thinking about what Arthur had said. What did she want? Did she want to marry Bill? Yes, but it had only been few months since Charlie’s death. The wizard who’d made so many sacrifices for her. He would always be in her heart as much as Bill was. Would she be disrespecting his memory if she were to remarry?
“Hermione…?” Bill called out softly as he approached.
Still undecided on what she wanted, she hugged Bill tightly, resting her cheek against his broad chest, trying to find her answer. Then a warm breeze brushed against her, surrounding her with the familiar scent of Charlie. She couldn’t see or hear him but she knew he was there, telling her to do what she wanted, whatever her heart’s desire.
She could feel her tears. There had been too much crying in the last few years but this time it was from happiness, knowing she could indeed have everything she wanted. Determined, she looked up at Bill and declared, “Marry me.”
“What?”
“Marry me, Bill Weasley.”

The bonding ceremony took place a week later on the lawns of the Burrow and unlike her previous ceremony, this time it was more intimate with just friends and family. No officials from the Ministry, except for few personal friends of Arthur’s, one of which officiated the bonding.
When she returned to Hogwarts for her apprenticeship, there were few whispered words amongst the students, questioning her remarriage less than a year after Charlie’s death but she didn’t care. She had a husband she loved, a beautiful son and was about to pursue a career of her dreams. She finally had everything she wanted.
